Consider using Virtualbox. Its a free very stable Sun virtualisation app. Easy to use, available for Windows, Linux etc. I've been using it for some time without problems. VMware's a great product too.

Best regards,

@xlinknz, while the recommended options for creating a VM are fine, dual-booting really isn't that hard and has the benefit of allowing all machine resources to be available natively to the OS. Also, if you're finding your way around Linux for the first time, it's a lot easier to know that any "issues" you may trip over aren't virtualization-related. I've just come from spending some time on another forum trying to help a new Linux user through some odd networking issues...the cause of which became apparent when they mentioned (some time into the proceedings) that they were running their Linux on a VM in Windows

I have a very simple "grub" setup on my main laptop giving me the choice of 5 OS's at startup, some of which are configured to access partitions "belonging to " other OS's with no problems at all. OK I do also run a VM environment in one of those as well - just for fun !

@wannabesatfreak & ald - the question of Linux susceptibility to virus infection is a subject well-covered elsewhere - in fact pretty much any tech forum will be full of flame wars on that very subject Laughing - fwiw I've never had an AV product installed on any Linux install in the past 10 years and (famous last words?) never had a virus problem

cheers!

Hey everyone,
I have an Acer Aspire 3500 notebook, 80GB HDD 512MB RAM at least 4 years old? I cant remember to be honest! I have had no hardware driver issues on Ubuntu, everything works well.

Have two partitions of ~40GB for XP Pro and Linux Ubuntu. I have upgraded Ubuntu to 9.04

My External HDD works great under XP. I'll have another play on Ubuntu soon.

Cheers
Dean

Im using Gnome Ubuntu Ryan. Thanks for the external drive advice. Will have a play later.

By the way, thanks everyone for AV advice, was expecting a pummeling, but I have read that Linux is not so suseptitical to viruses. AS I said earlier, I have not even had a virus on XP, but I guess I am choosy about what I install etc...
