The HP mini-note was a battery charger capacitor problem - not software so can't blame on Windows. Called HP, who offered on-site support if needed, but after being instructed on how to reset the capacitor (remove battery, push power for 15 seconds, reinsert battery), all is working again.
I am running the pre-beta Windows 7 32 bit on my HP Mini-note now with an Intel SSD - very fast boot - and Windows 7 64 bit on my HP Tablet PC. I think Windows 7 should actually be called "Windows Vista That Should Have Been Released Two Years Ago (TM)".
