I have a NZPO Digitel landline phone from the 1980's. There are buttons A, B, C, D and R. The 'R'  I would have expected to be 'recall' or 'redial', but it does nothing when pressed.

My main interest is what are the A B C D letters designed to do, or how to get them to work?

The original DTMF keypad design allowed for a 4x4 array. ABCD are unused buttons in NZ, I don't remember whether they were disabled. R could be an earth contact recall

As above, I don't recall the extra buttons doing anything. Is there a socket to plug in a power adapter? Thinking there would have to be if they were programmable speed dial buttons.

Thanks guys! No power plug, so these buttons will be unused ones.

Appreciate your valuable assistance.

And thanks for another reminder of how I'm aging. Both with memory loss, and the age of gear I used to install. :-( haha

I scored one of the fully loaded samples with speakerphone and memory dialler. It had several extra circuit boards stuffed into the case. Without a display the phone didn't need any more power than the line provided. Too many separate parts to be reliable, it's long gone. If the ABCD buttons produced any tones they'd be ignored by the network.

A, B, C and D are all valid DTMF tones. Quite a few phones had the buttons but nothing ever used them and over time they were just dropped from products.
