Hi,

Does anyone else on here do any investing? If so, what do you invest in? If not and you have funds available, then why not?

I invest in shares and property (and myself) mainly. I am constantly reading but my personal favourites would have to be for shares - fatportfolio.com (information on NZ listed sharemarket stocks but also covers a range of topics like technical analysis etc), for property - 'property investors chat group nz' (on Facebook, good discussion focusing mainly on yield strategies but also general tips like DIY) and for a bit of the FIRE Lifestyle, I follow a chap called Deep Dish (also Facebook, good mix of lifestyle and investing).

I invest both because I enjoy the process and because it provides the lifestyle I want. It's pretty easy to get started even with small amounts these days with the likes of Sharesies etc.

Any other investors on here? What floats your boat in the investing world?

"because it provides the lifestyle I want"

Is that your projection on the future or does it provide the lifestyle you want right now?

Find myself over at interest.co.nz quite often.

I use InvestNow for ETF investments.

The little things make the biggest difference.

I have a huge amount tied up in self managed shares and a few funds. With the massive growth shares have seen in recent times you've got to be an idiot to have money sitting in the bank with banks giving you 1.5% or 3% for a term deposit on a good day vs the 15-20% that's been easily achievable in shares over the past year. I've got a managed share fund from a big player that's currently even delivering double that.

The trick is going to be getting out at the right time..

Good question, the answer is, both.

I already have the lifestyle I want. I have everything I need and I'm very fortunate. However, more would be nice, as it would enable me step back a little more and give a little more time to charities as well.

We have a huge amount  tied up in Term Deposits - plus less than 10% of our portfolio in NZ shares. Even at the current low interest rates, as retirees we are able to live comfortably off the income - and even save money. So this approach provides the lifestyle we want without the uncertainty and volatility that equity markets involve.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Congratulations SBiddle. How did you manage to make your money in the first place, if you don't mind me asking?

Who is the managed fund returning so well, Milford?

What do you do to research your stocks?

Practically every working person these days is an "investor" if they've got Kiwisaver.

I believe the right word for the behaviour being suggested by OP and others is "speculator" - shifting funds around in various markets in the belief that you know more than the average punter.

@Fred99 can you please explain what this graph is saying? What does the number represent? Days after purchase? Days from today? Something else?

And it's hard to be sure which dot belongs to which country. Is NZ at 180 or 80?

Sorry - I should have attributed the graphic to Bloomberg.  The full article is behind a paywall.  I'm sorry if you have trouble seeing that NZ is at the top.

The article really has two parts.  Part one is mention about the possibility that property in NZ and Canada in particular may be in a bubble, but that there's been regulatory action to limit (overseas) investment to cool the overheated markets.

Part two is more optimistic for property bulls, that due to expectation that central banks will drop rates, that could stimulate sluggish property markets.

I actually don't understand what's happening over the past couple of years, hence I've become a very conservative investor.

I've basically just saved my money of the years..

I wouldn't say I research my investments as well as many others do. In many ways the share market is illogical and defies normal business sense.

Many good gains I've had have not been of what people write or say, they're looking at companies and gauging how well I think they're going. Some of the incredibly dumb questions asked by institutional investors at investor days and AGMs (and I'll use the recent Air NZ investor day as a classic example) show that many institutional "experts" don't understand basics about some of the companies they're investing in. There are so many cases of companies pushing stocks which in turn is driving the price up, even when the basis for the increase is illogical.

I've put a pile of money in Simplicity's NZ Shares fund recently which is delivering amazing returns. Their website lists 18.46% over the past 12 months, but in the recent short term it's been way higher than this.

Ah yes. The Simplicity founder seems to be on quite a crusade of accountability too, which I like.

What was the silly Air NZ question?

I found the above an interesting read. It basically says that while the accepted wisdom is to drip feed into low cost index funds its just a model and the model doesn't match market behaviour in all cases

from the link

Hence the following warning from Warren Buffett:

“Investors should be skeptical of history-based models. Constructed by a nerdy-sounding priesthood using esoteric terms such as beta, gamma, sigma and the like, these models tend to look impressive. Too often, though, investors forget to examine the assumptions behind the symbols. Our advice: Beware of geeks bearing formulas.”
