Right, but the selection *is* being done. All the clear photos and videos of geese and Cessnas are at second glance no longer UAPs, so the images get thrown away, Only the blurry out-of-focus ones still have a possibility that it *might* be an an alien.

On 16 Feb 2017 around 8.45pm...(I recorded a note about that day) I was sitting on the sofa talking to a friend on the phone and facing out to sea. (She heard my description).
I saw 2 round bright green lights seemingly coming out of the sea on the horizon vertically. I yelled at Mr E sitting next to me and we both got up and went close to the window in case it was a glass reflection. It was dusk. The lights rose up about two finger widths from the horizon (at arms length) and turned right, which is South West. They were going very fast and we followed them for about 15 seconds before they passed out of view blocked by hills.
Where they were flying is not the usual flight path of planes and they were going much faster and lights were top and bottom at about a 15 degree angle, not side to side as on a plane. They did not appear to be connected to anything...just lights.

I wonder how you knew they were going very fast? How do you know how far away they were?
It might be worth checking FlightRadar or FlightAware or similar to see if there were any aircraft in the area.

Many years up here watching planes you get to know the height and position visually. You can also recognise the speed as it’s pretty constant. These were moving way faster than any plane and were green. They were also very much lower in the sky than the usual flight paths. It’s difficult to describe distance and easiest way is to hold arm out and use fingers to measure by sight to explain.
There are always aircraft up here...we are looking out onto the flight paths as planes head to and from the airport. That was a one and only time.
In hindsight and practically, videoing would have meant registering the thought, picking up the iPad, opening it and finding the camera app, setting to video... it would have been impossible in the short time.This only lasted seconds.

I don't think so. That's human "culture" - not necessarily human "nature".
For example, most people I meet (with a few exceptions) are pretty decent.
Yet with global cultural political and business leadership, the ratios seem almost reversed.
If human beings are a "social" creature (seems to be true), then having leaders who place the "common good" ahead of showering themselves in riches while harming others would have been the natural way we'd have evolved - if we need "leaders" at all.

We look out toward the Kaikoura ranges and over the ocean from Chch.
The temperature inversions over the sea - particularly when it's still - cause bizarre refraction effects, ships "floating" in the air above the horizon etc.
Edit - we often see lightning too, especially when there's NW conditions, storm activity over the main divide but very clear conditions E of the ranges. The lightning tracker internet sites aren't very good for NZ, so seeing lightning but the sites aren't displaying it, I'd tend to believe what my eyes see - not what the internet is telling me.

Eva888: Good point @Batman. There is reported phenomena of lights observed as connected to earthquakes.
I do wonder if that's real, or if it's similar to the reported phenomenon of animals having some ability to detect earthquakes "before they happen" - which could be rationally explained by animals reacting to low frequency and amplitude "P waves" that travel through the earth crust and arrive before the strong shaking from the slower moving "S waves".
Our mutt was sitting on my feet (usual resting place) and went ballistic when the 2009 M7.8 Dusky Sound quake happened. I didn't feel a thing in Chch - was only the weird behaviour of the dog made me look on the Geonet site a few minutes later. Most of the Chch quakes were too close for the P and S wave arrival times to be large, but we did get to be able to tell and guess when some were further away, you'd hear a deep rumble a second or two before the shaking, but the frequency of that shaking was also a bit of a giveaway as to how far away the quake was. Was a very fun game, guess magnitude and location by what you could hear and feel, the winner of closest guess confirmed by checking Geonet, gave us something to do while the adrenaline slowly normalised. Our mutt gave up caring much about quakes, she'd only react in response to how we reacted.
Anyway, "quake lights" may have a rational explanation. High voltage power lines arc, people wake up and turn on lights etc (so long as the power doesn't cut out). Also conceivable that a lightening-like effect could happen from a piezo-electric generation in in shattering rocks.
P waves travel at about 3-4 km/s, S waves at about 8 km/s (variable, but good enough for approximation). So if (eerrr "when" if I'm still around) the Alpine Fault lets rip, then in Chch I'd expect the following. Closest point of the AF to Chch is about 120km. That's about 15 seconds P wave travel time. Before they arrive, I expect the power grid may shut down, but that's going to depend where and from which direction the fault starts rupturing. The speed at which rupture along a fault happens is similar or faster than P wave propagation, so the first P waves you hear are probably going to be from about the nearest distance to the fault / 8 km/s. The real shaking (from S waves) won't start in Chch until about 30 seconds after the fault ruptures. So if the lights go out suddenly, then shortly after I hear a deep rumbling sound, there's about 15 seconds to get somewhere safe. If the rumbling sound happens before the lights go out, it's probably just one of the local morons in a V8 taking out a lamppost. If I see lightning over the horizon, it's probably normal lightning.
