When we were kids we often stayed on an island in Bay of Islands. Our uncle would let us gather up firewood and make a huge bonfire. We were supposed to let the fire die down and cook sausages over the embers. We attached them with number 8 wire to flax sticks - the sticks from the flax flowers. Most times we were too eager to eat to bother waiting for the fire to die down so we usually ate charred sausages. Or the sticks caught fire and the sausages dropped into the bonfire frown

Taking advantage of any sunny day to have a family bbq and socialise outside - the best.

I'm tempted to say the 3 weeks of bbq cooking after the 2010 Christchurch earthquake that knocked out the power to the neighbourhood during that time.  The food consisted of whatever was thawing in ours or the neighbours' freezers.

However the best bbq experience was a romantic holiday in Marlborough Sounds where we lit a fire on the beach and constructed a bbq out of the flat rocks in the area and proceeded to cook the local oysters scavenged from the surrounding rocks.  I wish I had pictures.

Best Barbecue I recall would be Muscle Car Madness in Rangiora with my cousin and a few mates a couple of years ago. There was 5 of us, a 38 Ford, a 56 Bel Air and a New Charger with a shot of Nos and we had a mountain of meat, no photos of the feast as we had been drinking sufficiently at that point that photography was pretty low down the list of priorities.

Over the last few years I've gotten into American BBQ style smoking... Have kiwi'd it up and have perfected my signature Pohutakawa Pork ribs. Here is a brief photo doc of my secret... And my baby loving her first baby back rib rack. She might not remember it but I sure do.

Best bbq I had a was a wee while ago at a mates house one Halloween, first time cooking over hot coals, didn't realise how hot you needed to get the briquettes for them to smolder, so took us about 3 or 4 goes to get it hot enough to get it hot enough. And alcohol didn't help..

Needless to say, dinner was really very late. Great steak though! :D

I use to have youth regularly dropping in to my flat for coffee. Would often fire up the BBQ, watch a movie then if we hit midnight then the coffee would go on again.

Best bbq I’ve had was at the Pamona Swap Meet in California. Have never seen anything like It, and could smell it from hundreds of meters away!

My Aunty had to be a bit parsimonious after having 3 kids and only having one income; her husband being the bread winner. One day after a coal briquette fired BBQ she couldn't see the point of wasting the unused coal she decided to save it... in the boot of the car. The resulting fire and call out of the truck must have been pretty embarrassing, but especially given her husband's profession of fire fighter!

When I saw this post it reminded me of my first Christmas BBQ in New Zealand. My wife and I had moved to Auckland from Toronto, Canada. For our second Christmas here, we were invited to a BBQ at my boss' place. It was an odd feeling to be celebrating the holidays in the summer, something I'm still not 100% use to! That said, I am much happier having a BBQ in December vs dealing with -30ºC temps!

Best BBQ I have had were the ones while we live in Eastbourne some years ago.

Lazy long summer days, fire up the BBQ with the young kids helping/watching. Good food and everyone in the family had a great time. Fond memories ...

My best BBQ was just recently  when my daughter turned 30. We had family and friends over. It made it a great time with everyone.

Not my best BBQ, but my most scariest as in "what if I had stayed just a bit longer" was when I finished cooking, just got back inside and heard a large crash, an American Elm tree fell over right onto the BBQ, I still used it for several years even though the frame and legs were bent.

I once had to help cook for a group of 100 people using two BBQs. Normally somebody else did the cooking, and this time clients supplied their own food, making it even more of a challenge. We made it through the night, but I hope never to have to cook on one again. Love cooking on cast iron and a real stove though.

Not much of a story, lucky the prize is random.

One of my favourite BBQ stories is when my in-laws introduced me to a Braai - The South African method of cooking BBQ over hot embers. You start early because you need to burn the wood until it is in the charcoal/ember stage, and push these off to the side until you have collected enough. Then you bring them back to the middle and use a little flame and your breath to get them glowing nicely. Then the meat is placed in a grill suspended above the embers and the meat cooks slowly and gets turned regularly.

This creates a very tender and tasty selection of steak, sausages, boerewors, kebabs, etc.

Note: Coal can also be used as a shortcut option, and sometimes people will encourage larger flames for a more flame-grilled style.

I've attached an image from the web as an example of a Braai
