It's a laptop, so whilst it's nowhere near $1000 in value. IF they stop it, and the value is under $1000 what happens?

Not sure how you ended up getting charged GST. I ordered on 28 November. Shipped at around 7PM NZ time on 1 December, which is when my card was charged. No GST.

 

Maybe your order had to ship on 1 December at the latest to avoid the GST. I still think it's totally out of line for them to silently add tax to an order after you confirmed it - I would definitely challenge it.

Absolutely. If they refuse to refund, I'd definitely be doing a chargeback because they cannot charge you more than you agree to pay.

 

I have a pre-order with Amazon.co.uk which was due for release on December 2. It hasn't shipped yet, so it'll be interesting to see what happens there.

I also got stung by Amazon I actually made my purchase on the 29th and confirmed my Order. However they didn't ship my order until today and they retrospectively amended the price to include GST (when I actually confirmed my purchase no tax was listed). I am currently emailing back and forward to see if they will credit it back, I am trying to tell them that as long as the purchase date was prior to December 1st they should not be collecting GST, and that it depends on when my order was placed not on when they decided to clip my credit card. It seems I might be having a bit of back and forward with this order, since even if I resolve this i'll still need to deal with the issue that the memory stick I got is probably a fake.

Hmm, I got hit with the same thing today - ordered on 28 Nov but card only charged today - I can now see a charge on my credit card for the amount + GST.  Oddly the order status on the amazon site still doesn't say shipped, and still lists the GST free amount.  Because it's not marked as shipped I'm tempted to cancel it (the order management page still gives that option because it's not shipped)  I have since found the main item on the order locally anyway and with the GST the cost is pretty similar...

Yes i am trying to deal with their customer service but it's not going very well. I keep asking why they charged me tax retrospectively, when first of all i never confirmed the added charge secondly i raise the point that they shouldn't have charged the tax for an order placed prior to 1st of December.

Unfortunately they keep giving me a canned response about why tax may be charged copied and pasted from their help page

I had an amazon order placed on the 29th.shipped on the 30th.

They have just charged the quoted at checkout amount to my card.. Guess I got off lucky.

Geektastic: 'Must' is the wrong word.

The NZ government cannot compel an overseas company to do anything whatsoever.

 

The UK that you love so much does the exact same thing. According to them if you sell to the UK you must register for VAT with HMRC and collect and remit tax payments.

Same actually. My CC was charged pretty much immediately, as my item shipped within 2 hours of my order on Black Friday.
