Semble has published a "State of Pay" document that - even though clearly being marketing material - gives some good insights into the market and competition.

graemeh:
freitasm: It doesn't cost more than using a credit card, surely?

That was what I thought.  I assumed the cost of a credit card is the same, whether I use chip, swipe or paywave.

Perhaps they were thinking of debit cards.

I have been told, but have no way to verify it, that there is a cost to enabling the paywave functionality. I.e. paying PayMark or whoever vs Mastercard/Visa.

As I said, this could be rubbish, but that was what I was told when waving my phone over a paywave terminal before having to revert to "chip'n'pin".

PS AT Hop - please, Semble, get beyond the "in discussions"

Damn I wish Apple would open up NFC to select partners, because I'd really love to give Semble a go.
Here's an idea Apple: Until you launch in a country, allow a 3rd party in that country to offer a payment service instead of Apple Pay. When you launch Apple Pay, lock it back up again. Will never happen tho but I can dream.

Invention idea: Someone combine the PayTag things with Plastic / Coin / Stratos and make it programmable through Bluetooth or something via a companion app on the phone.

freitasm: Amazon is probably the safest place to buy anything.

Someone found your card and tried using it online. As simple as that.
i havent lost my card.and it only ever goes within 1m of me and the shop person. im not a shopper so the physical card gets used infrequently. Internet is another story

Your post said "Maybe a coincidence or not but I have just lost my credit card."

So you lost it, or not?

I remember using one of the older versions of semble earlier this year and faked my device and as well as used root cloak it let me into the app and was fine so what I'm wondering is does anyone have the app but not the v1.7.0 but an earlier version?? If you do can you please please send me a link to the app from your phone. I can let you know how to pull the apk from your phone . (app saver works good) .

Fingers crossed someone else if like me and has auto update always off .

Despite many retailers continually saying this, they do NOT pay more for a Paywave / Paypass transaction then a regular credit card transaction. In many cases they will actually pay less.

Using a debit card or credit card will cost the retailer more than a regular EFTPOS transaction which is a capped monthly fee for unlimited transactions.

This was covered in depth in a report published a few weeks ago (from memory by the retailers association) and made the mainstream media.

Interchange fees are however a problem that is only getting worse. You can easily argue the action the Commerce Commission took against the banks and credit card companies has basically backfired big time, and with banks heavily pushing credit and debit cards it's simply becoming a money go round where retailers are simply having to pay money to banks (which they profit from) for accepting payments. A chunk of this is then paid back to the customer for credit card reward programs.

Places like the EU are heavily clamping down on interchange fees, and it's expected most credit card schemes such as airline points and cashbacks will be pretty much wiped out as a result because much lower interchange fees won't allow funding these schemes.

I don't understand why EFTPOS isn't working on their own contactless solution. Or is that what semble does..?

There has been plenty of work done in this space, but there are challenges that would need to be overcome to provide such a solution.

Let's however put the tinfoil hat on for a second and look at the bigger picture - why would the big banks (as the owners of the EFTPOS network) actually be interested in building such a product and investing the money to build a solution? It won't generate them a cent of extra revenue.

Growing the debit card market on the other hand offers a near identical end user experience and costs them nothing. They also generate revenue from both credit (and to a lesser extent from debit) from interchange fees.

I was told it was not the cost of the transactions, but the cost of turning on the paywave functionality. Despite the machine having a paywave bit, it was not enabled, so I had to revert to paying using the credit card itself. Who knows. All seemed silly to me, the consumer.

They may tell you that, but the reality is that (some) retailers do not want to encourage use of a device that will eat into their margins.  I am waiting for the Comcom to step in, because some of these smaller retailers are being destroyed by the proliferation of this technology coupled with exorbitant transactional fees.  From what I have seen in the news it will be capped accross the EU at 0.3%.

Granted I havent been in the game for a while now, but these fees (for card present) a few years back were as high as 5%, with small business being the ones paying the higher rates.

This is the reality of what's happening.

I know McDonalds for example didn't enable contactless for a long time (despite being an initial ANZ trial store and having the hardware) due to franchisees baulking at increased credit card transactions. This was very different to most foreign markets where retailers such as McDonalds have been launch customers for the technology due to their size.

Growing numbers of credit card transactions are causing many retailers to pay significantly more. Many see this simply as a cost of doing business and accept that, while others choose to jump up and down and complain.

And that's the thing. The NBR piece gave the impression contacless transactions cost more when in fact these transactions go through the credit card network. Still cost the same but they are paid for, unlike EFTPOS which is all included.

They still pay for credit card transactions but contactless makes it so effortless that it tends to be more, so they complain.

When I pointed this out, a bunch of people replied saying that contactless fees are charged on top of credit card fees yell
