Philips TVs always came out at the bottom of Consumer's reliability surveys..

After having 2 Matchlines fail and hearing the odd horror story from friends that worked for electronics retailers it wasn't exactly a sad day when they pulled out of NZ. Thats not to say all their products are crap, 2 of the best sounding pairs of headphones I've ever owned were Philips.

Philips make most of their money from lightbulbs - TV's are a quick way to turn a large fortune into a small one...
A lot of TV companies lose money in the NZ market in order to gain market share - so when head office refuse to prop them up, they simply leave town. After all, you can't put percentage points in the bank.

My Philips purchases were really unreliable. The 32" widescreen CRT I bought in 2003 started buzzing loudly. Got a cheap PVR/DVD player that packed in after a couple of years and no spare parts were available. Got a replacement which was a dud and randomly rebooted itself. Got another replacement and sold it quick on trademe. I avoid anything Philips like the plague and stick to Sony.

Philips introduced the first audio Compact Audio Cassette tape in 1963.

In 1972 Philips launched the world's first home video cassette recorder. They then went on to develop the laser disk (Remember those big golden CD's that looked like records?)

In 1982, Philips teamed with Sony to launch the Compact Disc, this format evolved into the DVD and later Blu-Ray, which Philips launched with Sony in 1997 and 2006 respectively.

Philips is a very well known big brand. It just seems that here in NZ and Aus the quality is not as good as everywhere else. Back in South Africa, its seen as a high quality product. Somehow its just different here.

Paul Money had the Philips 21:9 screen on display. I think it was last year. You could ring them and see if they still had them.

Yeah, it seems that Vizio, and Samsung, completely smashed the Mitsubishi/Philips dominance to pieces.

I highly doubt Vizio will arrive on NZ shores though. However they seem to be doing really well in the reviews over in the States. And they produce some nice large sizes!

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I have one of the last Philips CRT TVs sold in NZ (cost approx $5,500). It's a 36 inch wide screen 576p HDTV. Had to replace the screen under an extended warranty which took months to be repaired. It has a great picture with none of the colour smearing lag of the earlier LCD TVs. Oh, it takes 3 people to lift!

I thought it was one of the most distracting things around, Guess the other manuafacturers did as well..

Especially when they combined the backlight with silver screen surrounds that refracted the light. IMHO it was impossible to watch one of these TV's in a dark room.
