mattwnz: Sometimes the extended warranty provides less protection than the CGA too. eg. one I purchased said they would only payout the price the device would be worth now, and it was at their discretion whether they replaced or refunded(but not a full refund) .
From my experience it is just as much of a hassle making a claim under an extended warranty, as it is under th CGA. However under the CGA, however if the retailer provides you with incorrect information regarding the CGA (eg something wouldn't be covered when it would be), they could be breaching your consumer rights, and I believe they can potentially be fined, but not heard of that ever happening.

They CANNOT contract out of their obligations under the CGA.  So regardless, you are covered by the CGA.

If you can spare a bit of your time, you don't have much to lose by attempting to make a CGA claim. I'd just dive head first and play hardball with them.

edit: which retailer? i know that on the receipt DSE's warranty is always a +2 or +5 etc year warranty, so a "5 year warranty" from them appears as "+4 year" on the receipt.

I guess you could look at it this way:

Retailer's extended warranty: 10% (or whatever) of the unit's value - potentially hundreds of dollars - Issue resolution time: 2 days
Disputes Tribunal : $36 - Issue resolution time: ~2-3 weeks

So if you're not happy to potentially wait 2-3 weeks to get the problem resolved, then pay the extra and get an extended warranty.  It's wrong, oh so wrong, but reality unfortunately.  At present it doesn't benefit the retailer to immediately honor CGA claims; AFAIK there are no penalties for initially dishonoring the CGA.  I personally would rather wait and make the b*stards honor the law, but that's just me.

I also notice on the Disputes Tribunal site:
You can now submit your application online
So that should speed things up a bit (it took me a couple of hours - including travel - recently to file my claim at the courthouse).

However, I also see directly under the online submissions text:
Site under maintenance, please try again later.

LOL

Actually no this is with regards to one I already bought. Bought a Playstation 3 back in Feb 2008 with a 5 year warranty -- now, here I am one and a half months over it and I have the dreaded 'Yellow Light of Death'. I was hoping I was actually covered for 6 years but alas I am not. I doubt the CGA would give me much backup after 5 years either.

Oh well, Murphy's Law.

I reckon you've got a chance using the CGA --- the PS3 is a premium gaming machine and the YLOD is a know manufacturing fault (with the type of solder used).

Possibly depends on how much use it has had. 6 Years of heavy use would be pretty good to get 6 years, and they have dropped a lot on price now to replace it. But if it is a known manufacturing fault, sony should fix it. Otherwise they should have recalled it, as products can't be sold with known faults.

XBox users would argue that the PS3 is not a 'premium' gaming device ;-)
For me, 5 years out of any of my electronic devices is a win... frankly, very little kit seems to be 'built how it used to be', with the exception of mid-high 2-channel audio amplifiers.
