Easier to prove if ten customers went to AnE the same day. Otherwise ... Only one person got sick? Hmm ... Over eat?

sbiddle: I guess you need to be really sure that they are the cause.

By far the most common types of food poisoning are salmonella, e coli and campylobacter. All have incubation periods greater than 6 hours so you're not going to see any symptoms in this timeframe.

That's not necessarily true.  Enteritis from staph may have rapid onset of symptoms.  It's probably just under-reported in some stats, as after chucking-up for a few hours you generally get over it - IOW by the time you start thinking it really might be a good time to go see the Dr, you start feeling better.
My wife got Salmonellosis, presumed to have been from contaminated sushi, a couple of months ago.   A good dose of that, and most people will end up seeking medical attention.

I am the OP here. It's now 96 hours since I ate the suspect food and I still have the diarrhoea. Have eaten little since then and spent a lot of time sleeping. Have felt very sick but not so bad this morning.

Had already thought of putting up reviews on Menu Mania and TripAdviser and have done that. Suspect restaurant is Zookeepers in Tay St, Invercargill.

Have been to GP but there was little he could do. He prescribed an antibiotic but said may or may not do anything depending on cause.

Contacted Food Safety people in Invercargill but they said little they can do without having had a specimen analysed. Submitted a specimen via the GP so I will need to wait some time for results.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

so it is confirmed as being food poisoning then hence putting up bad reviews on internet (I assume you weren't saying how good they were), one would hope so as if it isn't food poisoning and not from that restaurant you will have made them look pretty bad.

Klipspringer: If you believe it was the restaurant that made you sick why not just give them an online review of your experience?

I normally use:
http://www.dineout.co.nz/
http://www.menumania.co.nz

Because he isn't sure, and with a 6 hour period I would think it pretty unlikely it was the restaurant anyways. He could put a business out of business by "reviewing" without proof. Not to mention it being legally actionable.

You don't need "proof" to review a restaurant.

All you need to do is put down your real experience. Ie, went to restaurant. Got sick afterwards, unsure if it was restaurant or not.

ok so if you were in the service industry you would be happy to accept that someone reviews you on something that 'may' have happened.

I think people tend to over react whilst still emotional, not saying its the case here but would have thought waiting till one knows for sure would be batter but, hey, thats me

I think you missing the point.
Reviews are all about "your own personal experience"

The benefit of a review in this case is that it may prompt action. Maybe there were others that got sick that day after the meal too.
Maybe the restaurant will want to make right ...

If I was in the service industry, and somebody got sick 6hours after eating my food I sure would want to hear about it. So to answer your question. Yes I would accept that persons review and I would try to "make right". Its terribly bad for business if people are getting sick after a meal and I don't know about it.

NZ Herald is doing a "Dirty Dining Diary" of D grade restaurants:
Dirty Dining Diary
Brave volunteer reviewers IMO.
Somewhere (can't find link again) the Auckland overall results were stated, the vast majority (>3,000) were "A" grade, only a few hundred in the B, D and E grades.

As for general restaurant review sites, I don't trust them.  Half the reviews seem to be from shills, either from or for the owner, some competitor, or some disgruntled employee, and of the half which might be legit (if you can work out which are which) many of them were written so long ago that everything has probably changed.  I also got severe food poisoning by believing a Lonely Planet recommendation for a restaurant which they claimed was "safe, delicious, and nutritious".  My wife took one look at the food and state of the premises and declined to eat.  "But it's safe" I said, "read this", I was hungry - big mistake.

Don't think I'm missing the point at all, as I said is there any issue with waiting until it is confirmed. Have no issue with the place concerned being told what i do have is going on internet when not sure, that is unfair  to me, obviously not to you
