gzt: Does google offer a free training package? That might be useful.

Good question! I wonder if they do.

It sounds very wrong that the teacher is logged into every student's laptop/tablet.  Chances are that there is no bad intent, just a lack of knowledge or understanding by the teacher concerned.

My daughter's school use Google Apps for Education.  Up until last year, they were given access to a shared Google Drive for each subject but now they use Google Classroom.  Students can create and store documents on their own Google Drive, which is not shared, and add these to the Classroom if required.  Students have a "school" Gmail address and Drive, but my daughter also has her own, as she has an Android phone.

How old is your daughter? I' meandering what a good age is for a first email account in most people's opinions.

She's over 18 now and in year 13, but she got an Android smartphone on her 17th birthday* so has had a personal Gmail account since then.  She also had a school-assigned Gmail account last year and would have been 16 at the start of year 12.

* She's had her own mobile since she was 14, as we see that as an important way to keep in touch with her when she's out and about with friends, etc. but before she turned 17 it was a basic non-smart phone.

This just sounds like a case of an untrained teacher doing what seemed like a solution to the problem.
I have a friend who teaches intermediate and they have an IT guy at the school who they can email support requests to, but he only comes onsite once a week. If that is normal or even normal-ish, then it is no wonder teachers have to resort to going with what they think to solve problems. Really unimpressed when I heard that, schools run on IT now, how can they function with support like that? Maybe that is a discussion for another thread though.

Thanks for the response :) sounds sensible.

Around here in primary schools, once a week on site if you're lucky. Once a month isn't unusual. I think the high school had or has at least a part time if not full time person on their staff.

If you get no response from the teacher, go to the principal.  You don't have to sound angry - just point out that it's not appropriate and there are a number of better options.  If you get no response from the principal, try the school board.

Yeah, the primary I know has remote assistance from a company with a supposedly weekly on site visit to fix problems.  Of course there are always problems at the start of the year when all the upgrades are installed and nobody has actually tested them properly.  Busiest time of the year, IT stops functioning.

Changing the account password would be an effective way of alerting of the dangers.

This is ludicrous.

Who lets their child take a laptop to school?

How do they get any work done in their exercise books?

Shameful.
