What others have said about reading the policy terms and conditions.

We're with Medical Assurance. IMHO hands down the best insurer to deal with, bar none. Super friendly and helpful, always a pleasure to deal with. They are competitive on cost (though usually not the outright cheapest) but make up for it in not actually making it difficult to lodge claims etc.

But (and there's always a but) you have to apply for membership; membership is restricted to certain professions. They used to be limited to medical professionals, but have since liberalised it a bit.

One of their assessors said to us in all the time they had been assessing for them, they had never declined a claim to their knowledge even when it was the recommendation of the assessors. We have been with them for 15+ years and made plenty of claims.

I would however say, that recently their policies have become less attractive and they aren't QUITE as good to deal with as they were originally.

We're with Tower for the lot. Just want to add you get a discount for having all your insurance in one place so pays to ask about that. I hate insurance shopping and mine is up for renewal in a couple months.

We've used state insurance for years. Recently when we got another car I looked around, and when you include the online and new customer deals AA came out a lot cheaper. That difference will narrow when the new customer discount is removed, but it'll still be cheaper.

You can move insurers every year, it's really easy now to get quotes and apply online.

Doing this exercise now myself.  Bought a new car in the weekend, insurance on the old car was thru Youi because they were much cheaper than anyone else at the time...  now on the new car AMI appears to be $20 cheaper per month!  So will be switching that today.

I have found it very easy to compare prices online without the need for phone calls or emails.  You just need to go to all the websites and fill in the form and get a price, so much easier than it used to be!

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.
