JDNZ: geez you guys are harsh... he's a kid... I know I did a crap load of dumb things as a kid... why should it screw up his life.

He is an adult in this country. Not a minor.

I wish they had thrown the book at the guy, particularly after I saw him grinning on TV. I really dislike virus/bot writers. And, if he wasn't smart enough to avoid being caught it's his problem.

Have to laugh - what a joke of a justice system.

I don't see how his age should come into it - as pointed out he's an adult, not a minor.

I don't see how job offers, overseas or even from the NZ police should come into it.

He broke the law, and should face the consequences.

The messge this puts out, to anyone in a similar situation is that 'computer crime' is low risk - do what you like, earn what you like, hack into what you like, simple fact is, current sitting judges don't have a clue about how to even boot a PC, never mind what a virus or a bot is.

So, as a young up and coming criminal should I a) walk into a bank, wave a firearm around and leave with $50k or b) hack up a storm in my bedroom where no one can see me and do the same?

I foresee a wave of kiwi hackers. Hell, if I were a hacker living overseas I'd move to NZ to perpetrate my crimes!

Community service at the very least and a term of parole. He should be banned from computers for a couple of years to stress a lesson, as they do in the USA with these sorts of crimes. I don't see why he's been advertised as "skilled". I know at least 3 people that can take down many major websites single handedly, but they're a lot more "skilled" than to get caught and prefer to use their knowledge for good, not evil.
