You really have to wonder if one of the overseas call handling shops has let a little customer info out the side door to be as specific for names and region as it is.

Be nice to have a 'haveibeenpwned' equivalent of a phone number check to find the sources used.

I've noticed a lot of the recent crypto scams have my number, but attribute a former colleague by name - so I suspect they're harvesting address books and screwing up the names.

I've also noticed since COVID contact registers became a thing that I have been receiving more directed spam/scams. I'm wondering if maybe either someone has been taking snaps of paper COVID register forms at cafes, or some of those multitudes of systems (MyGuestList, PaperForm, GuestHQ, the list goes on...) are poorly secured.

Register skimming had been a distant thought. I've been using digital, and not had any examples. But also a 6 digit number when it seems more 7s been targeted

It would take a ballsy (not to mention someone with smarts, who as a result shoud know better) kiwi to harvest and target via an overseas SMS provider. Unless there's a black market wanted out that they get paid on.

I wonder how much of it is related to people installing dodgy apps on their phones and indiscriminately giving them access to their contact lists.

I am very careful with that sort of thing, but it's frustrating to know that I can't control the actions of other people who may happen to have my phone number in their contact list.

Dunno about them being ballsy and smart just because they use an overseas provider - in my experience from back in the day vs today, NZ based SMS providers are historically far more expensive than overseas. Aussie suppliers are fairly cheap and unlikely to be blacklisted at the network level like the Indian suppliers.

I don't mean go offshore specifically. But the whole campaign in general. Start up a vps, get a website up, harvesting input forms.

If it was local sourced covid data, you would be running a fine line commiting such a scam against fellow countryman

I Hadn't considered malicious apps using gps/ph book or contact data
