Only thing that annoys me is the veg they give you is often older/worse quality than you would pick up in store if you could choose yourself.

99% of Countdown's produce isn't suitable to feed to pigs, I don't really think they can give you the best of what they have because it's all rubbish..

Yes that is a good point, i stopped buying all my produce from supermarkets a few years back but occasionally when i need something i have forgotten then i find the quality is below average.

You can't clump all supermarkets into one because in many instances they are the best place to find quality product. Every Countdown however is always bad, and quite frankly it amazes me that they can be so consistantly poor. Poor quality product, and an obsession with displaying so much perishable stock in non refrigerated displays.
Disclaimer: I spent close to 30 years of my life in the produce industry so it's something I'm rather passionate about.

Maybe an exception, but in our local Countdown I have never seen cold chain product displayed outside of refrigeration and in fact cannot recall seeing such in any first world supermarket (not that I make a point of visiting markets apart from if needed) - have seen it in some the third world ones though.
(Tend to notice these things as some time back I held management positions in the export meat industry and have consulted to a multinational market owner).
sleemanj: NW South City operates a van in Christchurch as a bus service, could be that you're thinking of?

I'm in Whakatane so it can't be that. I had to pick up a couple of things last night so I went into New World and couldn't find any information about home delivery so maybe it doesn't actually exist after all. If I see another van then I'll scrutinise it more closely! :)

Visit any Countdown store and you'll see all their fruit displayed non refrigerated - apples should always remain refrigerated, especially after May when all the fruit is CA and/or Smartfresh. They also display large displays of veges non refrigerated when on special, and will regularly have thing such as cherries and strawberries to name some other random items. All are perishable.
