No wonder our productivity is poor. This ridiculous Christmas shutdown, together with the fact that work seems to dwindle to almost nothing for the last 2 weeks before Christmas and the first two or three weeks of January, must equate to NZ working at best an 11 month year...!

High time that was consigned to the bin. It's not even much of a money saving exercise these days, I would think - most businesses with fixed costs will continue to incur them over the shutdown but to no advantage since no work is being done.

I dont think productivity has much to do with this - it is more I think related to the cost of doing business which I would suggest is an efficiency metric.

Productivity in factory terms is simply a rate of measure of output, in office terms it is more the number of planned tasks for a given cost rate.

The annual shut-down is primarily designed for factory type premises where if a large proportion of your staff are on leave.  I've worked in such a business.

The xmas shut down enabled us to shut the whole plant down for two weeks,  and undertake extended or hazardous maintenance tasks.

Everyone had leave on the non-stat days. Except the maintenance engineers and this was specifically written into their contracts and RDs.

The alternative is to remain open and restrict leave on non-stat days to 10% of people.   That's what we used to do during any short weeks between consecutive holiday weekends.  Staff would get disgruntled and sick leave would sky-rocket ...

Sure some costs are fixed, and you have to wear those anyway.  But there are also variable costs which have a fixed minimum.  For example if machine-x uses a minimum amount of energy, regardless of production levels, then you incur that cost even if you have skeleton crew and are at 50% production.

You either have the lights on or off, you ventilate or not, you run the AC or not, a blast chiller has a start up cost and a minimum run cost, so does a boiler ...
