I suspect you are right Frank, and I have much the same thought.

An interesting station that appeared on Your Weather a couple of days ago, is from the Cape Campbell Lighthouse. That is so remote, I'm wondering how they manage their internet connection.

The MetService AWS at Cape Reinga appears to use the IP Star satellite as there is no cellular service that far north. I noticed a Farmside satellite dish on top of the building when I visited last year.

That must have been there but I couldn't have had the map zoomed out enough to see it when I first looked. I guess Cape Campbell is an obvious location for a WS.

We love Cape Campbell here in the Wairau plain. We see those southerly storming up the coast, but when they hit Cape Campbell they veer off and hammer Wellington. We are usually at least a couple of degrees warmer than Wellington — which is nice

So looking at going down this rabbit hole, Is there a ethernet (not wireless) based station that doesnt cost $2k around? Have 4 or 5 sites i can chuck units up at but dont want the hassle of rpi's at each site

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

So are you after 5 sites for 2k total ($400 /site) - doubt you will find one without RPing.
Or less than 2k per site..

$880 for this Davis cables station. Probably get discount for numbers.

You need to add one of these, which unfortunately pushes the price up quite a bit:

Serial Data Logger

For your situation with remote WISP sites, I would suggest serial rather than USB, and then use a serial to ethernet converter to hook it into the rest of your gear.

Ah well, Things like that make systems more complicated than they need to be. A simple DC or POE feed meter with either central computer or inbuilt web server shouldn't be that hard to pull off these days

Part of the problem is the very high margins at which these products are sold in NZ. Compare these US$ prices with the ones mentioned above:

Davis 6152C – Cabled Vantage Pro2 with Standard Radiation Shield – List ~~$535.50~~ ($ 391.00)

Davis 6510SER – Weatherlink for Serial Port – List ~~$148.50~~ ($117.00 )

Changes things radically doesn't it! For this reason I imported my own Davis weather station and saved a bundle.
