Dreal: Don't you think them a tad manipulative?

I think branding is starting to become more important than clicks. If people want your product, they'll google it. Unfortunately that doesn't serve the little guys.

All advertising is to some extent manipulative!

At least advertorials have space for decent imagery and for information.

You know TV ads are too cheap when they are used to tell you that toilet roll has a $1 off this week only...!

As more and more content moves to the net and companies get less revenue from previous sources the revenue they need will have to come from users on the internet. The problem they have is the technically savy users will not pay for it as they can get around whatever the sites come up with.

The interesting thing will be what 'Law of unintended consequences'  results arise from this.

I rather have ads than advertorial. You go to some news websites and read a piece written by a company Comms person and paid for. You have no way to know if that is news or simply talking about their own products because some sites don't make it clear.

This happens on Stuff now.

I prefer to see ads and I know they are ads.

One very annoying thing on Stuff is the full page ads where all around the content the whole page is an ad - and most of the times very ugly.

I like what I have on Geekzone better.

They have been around for years, the Print version has them as 'Reader Advertisements' we used to do full page ones back in the days I was at Wellington Newspapers Ltd, there were often two or three column ones on the Leader page

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Sure have. But I have the impression people these days can't see the difference.

Ah, I see your problem, Mauricio! You are reading Stuff..! ;-)

I just subscribe to GZ - it's a better way (for me, anyway).

No, I don't read Stuff. I stopped doing it a few months back when those stupid full page takeovers started happening.

I recall seeing one where the page was taken over to sell "The deodorant of the All Blacks".

That was a step too far for me.

If we had regulations, they would be marked as advertisements, like they have to be in print.

Probably for the best. The content is little better than a gossip rag nowadays.

And herein lies one of the issues of more people accessing your content via the internet.  Do you become a pay site or do you rely on advertising. And if you rely on advertising what kind taking into account users of you site will use ad-blockers to avoid advertising. (I mean sites like stuff)

I know this is a little off topic to this topic but it is related to advertising.  Is the over abdundance of reality TV related to the fact that watches of reality TV are more likely to watch TV advertising than watches of other content?

It is not really off-topic. It relates to the point Freitasm made about people not being able to distinguish advertorial from editorial. This kind of blurring has been going on in all media (at least in this country) for a long time. I do not think it is a healthy trend in a supposed democracy that depends on the votes of an informed citizenry. How can you be informed when you can't tell the difference between information and propaganda?

True, but if people wont pay directly or watch adverts how do you obtain revenue to pay for employees, equipment etc etc?

It is an evolutionary process. Although everything happens 50 years later in New Zealand, there is change overseas and even here there are some signs of it. TV examples might be briefer, but more frequent commercials in ones or twos, commercials that overlay programming, abrupt cutaways to commercials to fool ad detecting software, product placement and advertising integrated into storylines, etcetera. In other words, advertising won't lie down and die, it will just find new and better ways to avoid our attempts to ignore it.

There are on-line equivalents to this kind of thing. Freitasm says micropayments for content don't work, but I wonder if that is completely true. It seems to have worked for music streaming. If it is done in the right way, at least some people might be prepared to accept it.

The question is if there is any good way to pay for things now regarded as 'free'. I find most current forms of advertising offensive, intrusive and unacceptable and I don't see that getting any better unless masses of people stand up and say they are not prepared to put up with it any longer. The bottom line is that obnoxious advertising sells. If it didn't, it would cease tomorrow.
