The best RF amp in the world won't increase range beyond what FM is capable of. Depending on location and power of the transmitter, height of antenna, and terrain in between, you might be lucky to get a decent FM signal more than 20 or 30 kms away. This can be improved with a better external aerial but FM is still limited by its intrinsic capabilities. The signal will bounce around between buildings and trees and hillsides, affecting its quality, and it will be limited by the curvature of the earth. New Zealand is not FM-friendly countryside. If you want consistent good reception here on the road, AM is a better choice. If you want quality, play a CD.

A point in favor of AM - The number of jdm import cars on the road with no FM band expander.

Some cars have an aerial amplifier hidden away somewhere and this amplifier needs to be sent 12 volts to work. This 12 volts is usually controlled by the radio to save power.

 

It's possible that when your radio was fitted, this connection was missed, hence, poor radio reception.

 

 

My old nissan had that, and also the jap head deck was an actual diversity receiver which at the time no band expander catered for, so if you fit an expander you basically neutered it to only using one antenna, and if you put an aftermarket head deck in you had a generally worse radio on one antenna so it was really bad even with the amplifier powered with an inline adapter to put power on the coax cable.
