I'm not sure I see the issue here. Sure, companies that try to weasel out of price matches are acting like dicks, but can't the customer just buy the item from the cheaper retailer and get the lower price anyway?

They could buy them they may need to travel further to another store which costs and they may have sold out by the time they get there etc.  plus there maybe added benefits they miss out on as they used to offer flybys as an extra benefit

Okay, so for me, the last price match I did was at Harvey Norman, matching JB HiFi, I would've had to drive an extra 40 minute, minimum, round trip to get the item from my nearest JB, versus the Harvey Norman that I was pretty close to (was an issue of procrastination, and it was on a pretty miserable day).  Didn't feel guilty because I'm not a huge fan of Harvey Norman.

Normally my reason for price matching is "I'd prefer not to shop at that store". Think that pretty much covers the two main reasons for price matching.

For me it's about the misleading advertising. Retailers know that more than 70% of people who get declined a price match will buy it from them anyway because of the hassle factor of going somewhere else, finding a park etc etc.

For retailers they are just trying to get you in the door.

In Auckland for example, the retailer density is pretty high, you likely have 5 retailers within 6-7KM of each other. Out further you might have one or two.

They offered it to get you into the store, once there they hope you will buy other things too. If they offer it and then decline it then you wasted time going to that store.

If they do not want to match prices, all they have to do is stop saying that they will match prices. Its not a legal requirement that they offer it.

This isn't a price match story but a few weeks ago I had a major stick-drift problem with an eight-month-old PS5 controller, came with PS5 Pro bought from NL. I took it back and they were adamant that it had to go to Sony for repair or a decision, which would take three weeks. I argued all the obvious problems with this and their logic (it's an $85 item - not going to be repaired) but no dice.

I asked to speak to the manager and another staff member stepped in. Went through it again and I mentioned CGA and the warranty - and was assertive. Then they started mumbling between themselves and after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, they gave me a new one off the shelf.

A few years ago now, the cable for my PSVR headset failed. I'd bought from NL online but they were adamant that I had to take it to a physical shop. Local NL was basically "well what do you expect us to do about it?". Absolute refusal to order the cable (it was out of warranty but I was willing to pay for it). I ended up going to a different retailer and asking whether they could help, and they did.

Bit more to it than that. I play the Bunnings/Mitre 10 game where you can save literally hundreds of dollars as Mitre10 price match plus an extra 15% off. For example I waited until the DeWalt Table Saw I was after was a lower price at Bunnnings (by $9) and that was price matched by Mitre 10 with another $240 price reduction.

I do this for all power tool purchases.

I purchased a doo-hickey at HN yesterday.

I'd already googled around and they werent the cheapest, but also not the dearest, and was in stock at my local store.

But they tried to sell me an extended warranty, which I declined quoting the CGA.

And anyways I told the chap, "look it says right there "Buy with confidence"!

I dont generally have any problems price-matching at any store.

Another bugbear I have though is the "cashback". Just give me the discount now in the store and save everybodys time!!

Yes. However the cash-back comes from the manufacturer - not the store. The manufacturer is relying on the fact that some people will not claim it and that's a gain to them.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
