My best BBQ was an 'orphans Christmas' in Dunedin.
Everyone who had family from out of town piled around to a place in the hills and sat on the deck, eating a BBQ, drinking a few cold drinks and just yarning the day away.
No family dramas, screaming nephews or nieces, no 'you wash up - no you wash up' arguments, just chilled adults hanging on the deck chatting.
Oh wait... it's Christmas soon, I wonder if I can arrange another one of these?
My best BBQ was on July 15, 2002. Good people and good times. I've had some great BBQs since but a few people that were there are no longer with us, so it's not quite the same.
and yes, I do have a photo! (Taken on a film camera! back in the days when I had a Nokia 7110)
Some folks may know that I live in Wellington, and at times the wind can pick up a little and move the odd leaf around.
Back around 15, 16 October 2013 there was a full force gale going through Wellington that got worse as the evening progressed. I had moved my BBQ to the side of the house, thinking it would be safe, esp. with a full 9KG bottle on it.
I heard a crash around 930pm, and the wind had picked up the bbq, moved it, and physically hurled it upside down, denting the cover and spewing the contents everywhere in the garden.
I collected the thing while the winds were howling, and proceeded to put it away, more securely I thought.
40 mins later.... massive crash, and the same thing had happened again, causing real damage. The BBQ was toast after that.... and here is the photo:

One of my favourite BBQ memories is taking an older friend with us to a bach in Golden Bay. We'd cook on the BBQ. It turned out this friend had never had toast made on a fire or over coals on a BBQ - ever, in his entire life. So during the weekend anytime we made toast it was on the BBQ as once he'd tasted a lovely smoked piece of toast, dripping in butter, he was addicted. Everything else cooked on the BBQ that weekend paled into insignificance.
My BBQ story is more about my BBQ than a get together. I got given my parents old BBQ that had not been used in years and the hot plate was heavily rusted. I stripped it back with my drill, oiled it and cured it in my oven a couple times and the plates looked nice and dark. I then proceeded to have a nice BBQ with my flatmates. That was 2 years ago, since then someone nicked my gas bottle and I've never bothered to replace it.
More like a BBQ disaster story.
At the beach, put BBQ on downstairs to warm up, go up to get meat and when I return the BBQ is on fire (previous people left alot of fat on it), massive flames everywhere. I turn off the gas to wait for it to die down, next minute my mum rushes in with Fire Extinguisher and not only kills the BBQ but also the meat........went hungry that night
Just something I knocked up on Sunday. It wasn't enough!
Meat, Beer, Fire! The best combination
Best BBQ was always at my mum's at whatever random summer day or at my aunties with the rest of the family during xmas.
Best BBQ in the last 5 years was in Lonovala, India. We spent the the day exploring the ruins of a mountain fortress (which required several hours climbing in each direction) followed by exploring a massive temple carved into the side of a cliff.
By about 5pm we were so exhausted we could barely walk, so our drivers took us back to the campground we were staying at.
Our group (14) joined others at the ground for a massive BBQ that evening. About 100 of us sitting around talking, drinking, laughing, drinking, eating, drinking, singing, drinking and generally having a great time.
Finally feel like I am a proper kiwi - I have purchased a bbq with a hood! (OK, don't mention that I got it for a song at an auction), so I can now fire up two barbies when we have our Christmas barbie here this year.
My last bbq lasted well over 20 years - and the grid has been saved to use on a fire pit planned for the lawn - when we have time to do a proper fire bbq :)
We've got a serviceable three burner, the grill and flat plates don't quite fill the entire space so if we're cooking up a big assortment of stuff much care must be taken not to sacrifice a meat directly to the flames.
One day a decent chunk of steak made it down past the flames into the litter. Dusted it off and served it up anyway, not sure who ate that one in the end.
