It does sound like a lot of people don't understand what they don't believe in.

Is it intolerant and offensive if I thing that:

Grown adults who believe in Santa = crazy
Grown adults who beleive the world is flat = crazy

This is no different.

grown adults who beleive the world is 6000 years old = crazy
grown adults who believe their child's cancer is best cured by prayer rather than modern medicine = crazy

quoting extremes does you no favours.

I am not a religious person however I am mature enough to allow those who are to hold their beliefs without ridicule and insult.

what do you mean by extremes? I'm referring (in this case) to people who beleive in the bible.
those are biblically accurate things.
the bible literally says whatever you ask for in prayer you shall receive.

Of course, if someone doesn't actually believe that the bible is true and therefore don't believe in the crazy things within,  then they aren't really a christian (pretty much by definition) so therefore might not be crazy.

You have just demonstrated  that religious intolerance is a result of a lack of knowledge of the subject.

are you saying that the bible doesn't say this?  because it does.  very clearly.
or are you saying that you can be a christian even if you don't believe the bible is true?

I am not about to give you a theological lesson, but the Bible is a series of Allegories.

yes, its fiction I agree.  But christians believe it really happened.  If they don't believe it happened, then I don't see how they can be a christian.

I'd give up if I were you, god botherers rarely accept that they've wasted decades of their life based on what could be a work of fiction.

you're right. last post in this thread for me.

A lot of history in the bible did happen, as is corroborated by archeological evidence and non-biblical texts. See Bible and History. That'll keep you going for a while.

Alternatively, many Christians simply believe the message of what's written, but to do that you need to understand the context of what was going on when it was written.

And the Bible is very clear on what makes someone a Christian. You just have to believe a single sentence.

See my earlier post.

Well said.

I do like how people have posted here displaying their blatant ignorance regarding something they are all too happy to criticise.

They show the same open-mindedness as the fundamentalist 'bigots' they like to lump the rest of us in with.

I have just been told by a friend that a 75 year old muslim man stabbed to death 2 weeks prior in Birmingham. Obviously this is not interesting enough to be picked up by mainstream media.

joker97: I bet you wouldn't say that if your drunk parents who fed you vodka to keep you quiet and then beat you to a pulp and then left you and your nine siblings freezing and starving in the streets and a lady who gave up her life just so you got food clothes and someone to hold you

What????

Lots of fictitious books are spattered with bits of actual history.

I don't believe in mermaids. Perhaps I lack understanding.

Or not interesting enough to be called "terror attack".

Can it be called a terror attack if it's by a native on a foreigner?
Boil it down to the basics and it appears to be a British Native killing a foreigner.

I know from lots of friends and work mates things are not well in the UK. Lot and lots of resentment to foreigners who take over whole streets/areas and then enforce their beliefs on the locals.
It's all good and well having the freedom to believe/follow what you want. But when moving to a new country, you should not EVER try and force that country to change it's culture to yours.
In the past several countries tried to do that my government directive. It was called invading.

Interesting bit about how the media either copy and pastes or willfully omits.

DarthKermit:  Atheism is merely a category one falls into if he/she lacks any religious beliefs. It's a lack of belief; it doesn't imply any kind of belief in anything.

Actually, 'a belief in something' is exactly what atheism is.  Atheism is the belief that there is no God.
Google is your friend

Which takes greater faith?  Atheism or Somethingism?
To believe that I am the greatest being in the universe, I came from nothingness, that there is no intentional design, no purpose, and my destination is nothingness?
...or to believe that there is a being much bigger than me, who is way beyond my understanding, who has intentionally designed the world I know, who has a purpose for me, and will introduce me to an endless world?

Either belief takes faith.
Its interesting to note the passion with which the atheist will defend his faith :)

Certainly, to believe that science has reached the pinnacle of discovery is foolishness.

As far as the crazies go... well, people get all sorts of warped ideas and do all sorts of crazy things.  The line gets drawn, imho, where a philosophy or teaching starts teaching people to hurt people.
ie. "We should kill all who do not believe".
I don't mind if your form of religion says that you should eat bananas 6 times a day... I don't even mind if you try to show me how the bananas diet will give me a better relationship with the Cloud Fairy... just don't cut me open to stuff me with them!

I just have a question -

can science 100% conclusively prove that homo sapiens evolved from primordial soup?

can science 100% conclusively prove that there is no god?

can any scientist explain the existence of matter? in fact the current most accurate explanation of matter is the string theory and can only work if there is at least 10 dimensions (we are only able to prove/explain three or four) ...

these are some questions that in my opinion, show that we may not know everything. we know we evolved somewhere. we know humans can't walk on water and cannot fly. we know that we all die one way or another. that's as much as we know we know ... heck we don't even know how the pyramids or Stonehenge were built (do we?)

What amazes me is all the people who half arse believe in their God. I follow my belief in science and all it entails with a religious fervor. So many people here need a Hitch slap. Please Google that.
