Jexlar:
Do you honestly think that's going to make a big enough difference to what stats I am currently already getting?

I don't get how you badly wire one either.

You're not getting errors so I don't think there is a problem there.

I guess if you don't use a proper punchdown tool you might be able to screw it up somehow.

Dammit! I haven't been getting update emails on posts to this thread!? I thought it was a tad quiet! :)

@Jexlar: Welcome to the thread! Looks like you have a pretty good line there, but as Steve mentioned, the highest attenuation we've seen for a swap to 17a is 7db, but maybe you'll get lucky... :) How far away are you from the cabinet?

BTW, congrats everyone, we've made 100 pages! :D

I think I am about 110m from the exchange....

Hmm, I reckon you should have better attenuation than that. Looking at your line may well get you on 17a!

If it's really 110m of cable the attenuation should be lower. But with the exchange, who knows? I would expect the cabling would be less direct than for a cabinet and there is an unknown length of wire inside the exchange as well.

True, but it's better than 600m anyway :)

My DLM has changed I think, now 0.0/0.8 INP, perhaps I'll be on DLM-1 soon enough if the errors stay low!

We've had our DSL for 2.5 weeks, and we're now getting some rather odd behaviour out of it.  In between my first posts and now we've had a couple of things happen, so a quick timeline:

  * VDSL is connected.  Squeaky cleans stats with consistently max 4 CRC per hour - http://chez.geek.nz/VDSL/20130603/
  * I fail to get SNR margin tweaking doing anything on our VDSL modem and give up on it.
  * Wed 5th June VDSL stops syncing, at all.  During this time our modem is reset to factory settings, firmware reflashed, and even the official AVM rescue utility is used after we locate and unpack the only Windows PC in the house.  It's safe to say that there are no SNRM tweaks in action on the device at this point.  We give up and call Snap.
  * Thu 6th June a port reset is done.  No change.
  * Fri 7th June a Chorus technician spends 2 hours at the cabinet on hold on his phone to various people.  He gets our VDSL working again.  However our new baseline CRC per hour is anything from 40 to 100.  Sync rate more or less the same as previously.  We remain on DLM-1.  I suspect we may have had a port change.
  * Line is stable, albeit with a higher CRC and FEC rate than it used to have.  The new baseline CRC per hour remains in the 40-100 range with some noticeable spikes in CRCPM around 11am-1pm, but nothing to worry about (except growl about, given how squeaky clean it used to be!)

Current events:

  * 7am Fri 14th June I notice that our downstream rate has dropped to sub 40Mbps and upstream is down to just over 1Mbps!  Resyncs occured during the night.  http://chez.geek.nz/VDSL/20130614/  I lacked the foresight to grab the system log before forcing a resync.  After a forced resync things went back to (the new) normal.  I chalk it down as a once off that's not worth calling Snap about as it's now resolved.
  * 7am Sat 15th June I notice that our downstream rate has AGAIN dropped to sub 40Mbps and upstream is down to just over 1Mbps.  A resync occured just after 18:00 the previous day.  http://chez.geek.nz/VDSL/201306150723/  I then forced a resync without rebooting and got back to (the new) normal http://chez.geek.nz/VDSL/201306150731/  This time I did get the system log:

14.06.1318:15:57 DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 40080/1624 kbit/s).

14.06.1318:11:22 DSL synchronization starting (training).

14.06.1318:11:02 DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization).

It took just over 4.5 minutes for sync to complete, which is a long time!  In comparison, this morning's forced resync took less than 30 seconds.

15.06.1307:28:04 DSL is available (DSL synchronization exists with 43808/10352 kbit/s).

15.06.1307:27:48 DSL synchronization starting (training).

Our VDSL is wired up as follows: incoming black telecom 4 wire cable - black and yellow pair scotchlocked to 2.5m of cat5e which is terminated with an RJ45 that plugs straight into the back of the fritz box.  NO other cables attached the primary phone line.

We are rural.  The run from the cabinet to our property, as far as we can tell, runs on overheads for the first 250m, crossing the road, running alongside it, then crossing back to our personal power pole, running down that pole and diving underground for the second 250m until it appears under our house where it runs for another 10m until the join to the cat5e described above.  There are no live electric fences on our property, and in any case, this doesn't look like electric fence interference to me.  It looks more like one-off relatively short duration (a few minutes or more) events.

While I wait for it to happen again and collect more logs from it, does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be?  I'm working on the assumption that there's /probably/ nothing we ourselves can do to rectify the problem other than gather supporting evidence to give to Snap to give to Chorus, but you never know.

Is there a way to get the Fritz box to emit noises on connected phones when certain syslog messages are generated?  It would be nice to be able to watch events unfold, particularly in the aftermath, see how long it takes for the line to settle back down after the glitch - is it a 5 minute glitch or a 5 hour glitch.

Just got Naked VDSL from Snap yesterday.
I'm in an old 1957 house with jacks in every room (only got the keys this week).
Haven't got anything plugged into the phone jacks other than the modem, but looks like i might need to disconnect all the other jacks in the house anyway to clean things up.

thats still only 1.666666666666667 CRMPM which is the value we tend to look at, will still keep DLM-1 with that.

Yup, definitely do this or get a master filter. It sounds like you already know this, but it's worth repeating:  You want the pair that ultimately connects to the modem to have absolutely nothing else coming off it (expect if it splits via a master splitter)

How many rooms\jacks does the house have?  I suspect you might be looking at a similar before\after picture as in the first post of this thread ;-)
