Depends on how much data you want.  There are plans from most providers that provide cheap/inexpensive naked dsl options relative to how much data you want to use.

We (Compass) do Unlimited FS/FS Naked DSL for $79.95 a month.

sbiddle: Clothed DSL is the industry standard term for a MPF provisioned with xDSL+POTS.

Which standardisation body made it an industry standard?

A name doesn'ty need to be set by a standards body to be used. You might have an issue with it, but they the accepted terms for the products by literally every person who works in the telco / ISP space in in NZ. It's also a term uses to describe DSL in many other countries (in the US however some do tend to refer to naked DSL as "dry DSL") . In all seriousness you're the first person I've come across who seem to have an issue with two terms that to me seem exceptionally logical, and with something that's in such common use in the industry I don't thing anything is going to be changing any time soon.

So it's a colloquial term used on messageboards and informal discussions, but not an industry standard?
I was just asking, that's all.

No it's not just used on mesageboards, they are the two industry terms used by everybody in the telco and ISP industry to describe either a xDSL connection with POTS On, or a xDSL connection with POTS Off.

If you don't believe me Google is your friend...

Thanks, but I checked google and wikipedia.
Naked DSL is widely used.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_DSL

But not clothed DSL
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=clothed+dsl

I'm sure there are some people in the industry that might use the term, but it's seems to fall a long way short of an industry standard.

If you're trying to debate that the term is confusing or not used you're quite honestly barking up the wrong tree. At the end of the day it's a term used every day in the industry to describe a xDSL product with POTS, and IMHO is exceptionally straight forward - the opposite of naked is clothed. Anybody involved in the day to day provisioning of DSL knows what it means.

Anyway I'm out of this, you can debate this with yourself. I can see I'm not going to get anywhere by explaining things to you.

I was just trying to find if it was a standard or not - it appears not.
No offence intended.

Just because something isn't on wikipedia doesn't mean that it isn't an industry term. Eg I can't find flush box in wikipedia but if you ask anyone in the electrical industry they'll know exactly what it is.

Clothed DSL is much the same. It isn't an ANZ or EN standard but it's a generic term that the industry uses. To suggest otherwise would be a bit silly.

Frietasm,

How does one go about checking "if there's a port available in your exchange"?

alexx,

You are correct that frietasm gave me a list.  Here is another list, it is obviously old and outdated.  I did visit every single website, many of which are now defunct, or have merged with other organizations.   Here is some expanded information from that list that some people may find useful.  I didn't include them all but it is safe to say that most fall within the $70 - $80/mo range which I regard as uncompetitive.

Least expensive Naked DSL service in NZ

Earthlight - earth -lite (1GB) - $34.45/mo (unsure if it is naked DSL)
InSPire - InSPire 2 GB Bitstream (2GB) - $35/mo (unsure if it is naked DSL)
Slingshot - Broadband 10 (10GB) - $40/mo
TelestraClear - Naked Broadband+ (20GB) - $55/mo (technically not naked DSL)
fyx - Pay as you go - $55.30/mo + $0.30/GB
Snap! - Naked Broadband 10 GB Basic (10GB) - $60/mo
Kiwilink - 2GB Plan (2GB) - $65/mo
WebWorld - Express 5GB (5GB) - $66.95/mo (unsure if it is naked DSL)
Vodafone - Ideal Naked (20GB, Outside Red Network) - $85/mo
Orocon - doesn't offer naked DSL

Quite of bit of thread creep/hijacking going on here.  However, I will add just one reference re: clothed DSL and I'm sure there are more:  Kiwilink.

Add WorldxChange to the list.

And a bit more care with the names - Orcon and TelstraClear ;)

All of the ones below $50 are not naked, they require a phoneline of some kind.

Basically, there are two options for an ISP to provide naked broadband.

1)    Buy it from Chorus.  You will almost never see this priced below $60 inc GST since it costs them almost that much just to buy the input from Chorus (and that is before any of their other costs, backhaul, overheads etc)

2)    Unbundle an exchange. This might end up cheaper since they have a smaller cost, but even then it is cutting it pretty fine. Telstraclear’s Naked Broadban+ is probably the cheapest you will find. Sure, technically not naked, but for all practical purposes it is.

If you see a broadband plan for less than $50 I guarantee you it is not naked.

Slingshot - Broadband 10 (10GB) - $40/mo

appears to be naked DSL and less than $50 (it is actually $30/mo + $10 if you don't have a landline with them)

it's not naked.

the +$10 per month is if you don't have a landline with THEM (i.e. you have a landline with someone else)

the naked part is referring top the plans that are called (wierdly enough)  NAKED, and is $80 for 30GB or $90 for unlimited.
