nicks: We had fibre installed today. The Chorus technicians tested web browsing and did speed tests with a laptop plugged directly into the ONT. So it is definitely possible. Connection is with Telecom.

We only telnet into the ONT to set its ID - there is no other setings that can be changed on the ONT localy - updates of the firmware are done remotely via the fibre connection.

End user internet access/speed checking is done via the router (RGW) and not directly via the ONT - there is no point as testing directly as compliance testing is via the providers equipment .

Ok, my mistake. I thought the laptop was plugged in directly - the router is in a different room from the ONT - but they must have had it in there while they were setting everything up.

Realtek nics need some bloatware from realtek to add vlans, they show up as additional LAN hardware once configured.

its called the realtek ethernet diagnostic utility for some reason.

I used pppoe on my pc to connect directly on ont and it worked no prob. no vlan tagging. im with planet/kci

As I mentioned above this will work if the RSP has requested untagged UNI ports on the ONT. It will not work in the vast majority of cases as by default traffic needs an 802.1q VLAN tag of 10.

I too am experimenting with different connections to ONT. Previously I have used a virtual software firewall appliance called Sophos UTM 9 to my ADSL connections but cannot get this to work directly to the ONT. If I just put it behind the Snap provided Ftitzbox (Double NAT) then performance is crap. I am trying out different virtual firewalls but might need to move to a dedicated hardware setup.

My sophos will not even see the PPPoE connection (logs show it fails on discovery timeout) so I can only assume that I cant get the VLAN setup right - either due to incompatibility or configuration.

Has anyone else used any sort of router appliance successfully with UFB?

Snap UFB here.

I can connected with Win7 laptop using PPPoE dialer. No other trickery required.

VLAN10 should be correct for Vodafone I believe.

I use a self build pc to run pfSense as my router for my vdsl2 connection with Snap atm.
I am not sure if it's as easy as setup PPPoE and VLAN tagging in pfSense for UFB, as I am not connected with UFB yet.
btw I am running pfSense 2.1-BETA (amd64) and also UFB will be on my street soon.

wonder if anyone running pfSense with UFB could share some light on this matter?

Pfsense can do it, Interfaces > VLANS to create the vlan and add it to the pool then Interfaces > PPP to configure PPPoE to use it.

Pfsense can do it, Interfaces > VLANS to create the vlan and add it to the pool then Interfaces > PPP to configure PPPoE to use it.

UFB connections come in two flavours in essence, either with a tagged UNI or untagged UNI. Most providers cater to either connection type, you can request that your connection is untagged or tagged.
Most RSP's will select a 'default' style of connection, which their customers will be configured with.
The actual configuration is set by the provisioning process carried out by the LFC. Your RSP can request that the change between tagged and untagged be made for you.

The main difference between the two is that with an untagged UNI, there is no differentiation between high priority and low priority traffic, so the CIR component is negated on an untagged UNI, leaving you with a PIR connection.

In a direct PC to ONT connection situation, untagged is definitely easier to set-up as all you need to worry about is authentication (generally PPPoE).
