I am in an area with VDSL available, 800m from the cabinet but could only get 4/2mbit, then again my ADSL is only connecting at 5mbit so defiantly something up with the internal wiring / the fact the cable is on overhead pylons.

For what it's worth I decided to bite the bullet since pretty much all the ISPs (even Vodafone which insisted that it was wholesale reasons they couldn't provide VDSL service off the new cabinet) now indicated that they'd provide VDSL no questions ask (shocking considering the distance considering the distance, but oh well).

Either way, I should have a fair idea by Tuesday evening and know for certain 10 days after.

Couple of side notes though..., Telecom's new address checker, that didn't exist when this thread was originally created, quotes (and I'm not kidding):

Ultra VDSL, Downstream at up to:  24-25* Mbps    (* [Usual get of jail free stuff which I completely understand and get])
ADSL, Downstream at up to: 12-19 Mbps


a 10Mbps boost over what I'm currently getting would be awesome, but my hopes are set towards to the more realistic goal of about 5 Mbps boost (20Mbps) and primarily the Upstream boost.

Secondly, the Telecom ADSL figures are actually quite accurate really, from attainable rates reported from 3 modems that report them (the previously mentioned TP-Link & Telecom modems, and VF's 'HomeHub') range between 15780 (T/Com) & 18992 (HomeHub), and out of 5 working ADSL2+ modems, actual sync rates fit in a range of about 14254 (old Linksys) & 16326 (HomeHub), so there is some hope that there is some truth to Telecom's guesses. Time will tell.

The DLM 10-day period should essentially now be over (or actually maybe, looking at my logs, maybe tonight...). Aside from a minor negative last-minute tuning (!!!), I'm impressed.

The nice thing about the speed jump on the 11th was it wasn't actually a DLM retrain, it was a resync after a ~10-minute power outage, so I actually took that as a bonus.

Seems like there are two conclusions:

a) Telecom's address checker is fairly accurate, kudos.
b) If the majority of providers are offering it, but it seems marginal, with the current policy it seems win-win

Thanks everyone that helped and provided advice (especially Peter, I would've stayed with Telecom, but then honestly, a CSR let everyone down).

I was trying to get VDSL aswell, loop length around 1.2km, 22.5dB Line Attenuation, and they sent a Chorus guy to install and when he did the first test he told us that we were too far away and there would be no benefit.

It seems the last resync dropped me onto a super low latency profile (1ms), speedtest.net now reports 8ms and pinging VF's Google cache box is 5.xx ms away, sounds like a DLM-1 type profile unless I'm mistaken, I NEVER expected that.  Stability seems good still too.

yes. thats DLM-1.

generally you wanna stick to that profile, although sometimes on a marginal line its better to stick to higher profiles, as often you will be SLIGHTLY faster.
