Aredwood: Maybe I should do a Write up on how to configure the Edge Router for NZ internet connections.

That would be brilliant. The version of the firmware that I started with had a wizard but it couldn't handle the VLAN tagging. I'm now on 1.5.0 and will have to look at 1.6 to see if it offers any benefit to me for upgrading.

The release notes for V1.6Alpha1 say that the bug I mentioned has been fixed. Although in reality the easiest way would be to simply publish some example config files. Then all you would have to do is edit your username / password.

But yes a write up would be good. To do so I would need to find out how every ISP handles Auth on their connections. (PPP, DHCP ect) Also AFAIK you would still need to use the CLI to enable PPPoE offload. Which is necessary to get speeds higher than approx 130Mbit with ISPs that use PPP.

The UBNT forums already have quite comprehensive example configs.

If you load the config that includes a PPPoE client that is pretty much all you need.
Then it's just a case of removing the PPPoE client, adding a VLAN interface, create new PPPoE client and then you can go back to the GUI and re-assign the firewall rules.

something like...
remove interfaces ethernet eth? pppoe 0
add interfaces ethernet eth? vif 10
add interfaces ethernet eth? vif 10 pppoe 0
add interfaces ethernet eth? vif 10 pppoe 0 user-id ?????
add interfaces ethernet eth? vif 10 pppoe 0 password ?????
commit
save
exit

...i think thats right. Haven't got a ERL handy to check. But it is pretty easy to figure out the CLI because it has tab auto-completion to find out what commands are available.

All in all I don't know why anyone would buy a ERL over a Mikrotik though. They directly compete with each other in terms of price but the Mikrotik is far more mature and has far more features, including a wireless interface if you went for a RB951-2HnD which is cheaper than a ERL.
I'm not saying the ERL is a bad piece of kit, the Mikrotik equivalent is just better.

Are you considering buying an Edge router? Can easily flick you a copy of my config file. PPP offload is specific to the Edge Router (AFAIK). It is using hardware acceleration for PPP, VLAN, and some other features. It means that with the right config, you can get gigabit speeds over a PPP internet connection. (But currently only on IPv4, IPv6 is non accelerated and would top out at approx 130mbit). But considering Snap is the main ISP that offers IPv6, and Geekzone, Google, and Facebook, are the main sites that offer IPv6. So that is unlikely to be a problem to anyone.
