Coil:What does this mean for the Aussie users as well?
michaelmurfy:@xpd They can be TFTP flashed. I had one in the past that TrueNet didn't want back. Basically downloaded the latest OpenWRT image and put the router into TFTP flash mode.
Sad to see the service end, has been a regular read throughout the years! All the best
Thanks for keeping em honest!
Just had a look at my probe, it is a D-link DIR 615 Hardware version E4, This is the link for new firmware
http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-615
Also compatible with DD-WRT firmware
https://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-615_rev_E3
I will probably try DD-WRT which will give me a reasonable spare route.
This is a really great guide for the Mikrotik node: https://tushev.org/articles/blog/16/how-to-recover-un-brick-your-mikrotik-rb951g-2hnd-router
Done this on Friday night successfully and was very painless. Configuring the router itself once the software was loaded is another story, but only a bit of a learning curve which I've overcome as it's now a fully functioning AP.

JohnButt:
From Andy Thompson our developer for the firmware code:
There is no password. The easiest way is to use the Netinstall tool from MikroTik, you set it up as per their documentation and then hold the reset button on the router while applying power (hold until it beeps I think). All going well it should show up in the list, select it and load the factory firmware.
I did this and it worked. I had to do a 'factory reset' with the button after loading on the firmware.
Thanks John and Truenet, it was fun to be a part of it.
So I can get the router to show up in the Netinstall program (after many attempts - needed to hold the reset button till it shows in the list), but it won't load either of the RouterOS packages I've tried ie. 5.26 (Legacy) or 6.41.1 (Current). Which one has worked for you guys?
There also seems to be a few people saying that it doesn't work from Windows 10. I don't think I have any Win7 machines laying around.

I did it fine using Windows 10 loading the latest RouterOS package. Can you post a screenshot of your setup (netinstall) and any error message you're getting?
Didn't receive any errors. It would change the status to 'Installing' and 'Sending offer' above the progress bar, then it would go back to as if it the program had just opened.
Tried on a different Windows 10 machine and it worked first time. Maybe it wasn't compatible with the NIC on the other one. Who knows/cares, it works now :)
Any of you tried this router on a gigabit fibre connection? How does it perform?

Depends what you're doing with it - RB951 performance should be very similar to an RB2011 - you'll probably be able to get near 1Gb/s on a speedtest with fast track enabled. However with any slightly more complex firewall rules / VPN etc running then it will struggle. Was it @chevrolux recommending RB2011 for up to 200 Mb/s or thereabouts? Block diagram shows only 1GB/s FD between the CPU and switch chip and that path needs to be traversed twice for routing.
No chance with a RB951 on Gigabit I would say - mainly because the majority of NZ providers are doing PPPoE. Maybe I guess if you could use fasttrack/fastpath, but it is still very limited to the point where if you want to do anything mildly 'complex' it wont be active.
RB3011 would be my pick for Gigabit. Those things are beasts!.. for the price anyway.
