Do you need it? Probably not, but with stuff offering it for $5 extra and Orcon for the same price as 200/20 why not take it?

I'm about to move to stuffs offer with 4 months free, we really don't need it and never max out 200/20, it's just the odd download that will utilise it and I'd like the faster uploads for using a VPN. Those uses aren't worth $30 a month but I'm willing to pay $5 for it now they are charging less for upgrade.

mentalinc: I'd expect it [10 gigabit fibre] to be much cheaper than $1,000 per month.

Current domestic prices overseas:

USD $300 per month (Chattanooga, Tennessee) = NZD $475

GBP £299 per month (London) = NZD $600

In my opinion, gigabit is fine for a business with lots of users, but total overkill for domestic use.

If you ask chorus, gbit is the plan for families!

Are they just preparing us for 10 gigabit at $1,000 per month?

to be fair as far as i'm aware no price has been quoted. and that is purely a trial for XGPON.

There have been a few posts with information from public trials, and there are far more providers doing private trials.

Personally, the biggest thing here is, Look at the issues with 1G. you move that to 10G and it gets about 1000x times worse..

At this stage nobody quite knows what will happen with XGPON, i personally doubt it will be used enforce to sell 10G. more likely probably a 2G/5G service or something like that...

You can also bet providers will price it accordingly Given the support, network, systems costs etc.

Why can't I get 10Gbps to my iPhone 6 in the back yard?

No extra support costs here...

10GB is a whole new story. Networks need to be dimensioned accordingly to ensure everybody who has that service is capable of getting it. That costs $$$

Well...some people like to spend money on car hobby. Some like my wife, spend money on horses stuff - like the new horse arena currently in the process of being built.

So I like to think, my little indulgence is a 900/400 internet connection.

Recently went from a solid 70/30 VDSL Line to 930/520 (well thats the max throughput I have had).

We would often stream at least 2 netflix shows at the same time here regularly, and sometimes even download in the background. It was never enough to ruin any experience on the VDSL.

When I got max, it was nice to download cached updates in a few minutes etc. But didn't really change my life an awful lot.

If ubiquity would fix the 50% CPU used all the time problem on the USG it would probably be better. Im not spending 1000s to get that last little extra bit out of a gigabit connection.

set interfaces ethernet eth0 vif 10 pppoe 0 dhcpv6-pd prefix-only

SSH into your USG, type "configure" then enter that command followed by "commit". It'll put your CPU back down to normal levels.

To make this survive a reboot you'll need to add it to your configuration.json file - see here: https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/215458888-UniFi-Advanced-USG-Configuration

Thank you guys this has been really interesting, I've been given orders so it looks like 200mbit will be it its going to be better than the 100mbit cable I'm sure.

I'm on Enables 950Mb/s plan through 2degrees and to be honest my home setup doesn't really support these speeds, wifi is stuck on 300Mbit/s and that's in optimal conditions, hard wired Ethernet also probably not setup ive only ever seen it hit 500-600Mbit/s. If i wasn't being subsidized by my work to have this plan i wouldn't have bothered. We are typical family of streamers do about 400-500GB per month.

If you turn off ipv6 it stops, because its some bad config on their part with how ipv6 works. Not been fixed by them in a long time and when I last complained to them about it was told that ipv6 was a beta thing so not supported. I'll try the command later and see if it helps the thing perform better.

I find 100/20 perfectly fine for concurrent streaming of a couple of Netflix connections, RDP, and so on, but I have a question:

On my desktop, which I also use for work, I also run ad blocking and Ghostery, and these seem to slow webpage loading quite a lot. Would I get faster loading on 1000/500 or whatever, or is the slowdown more to do with my cpu (5-year old I5, with 8 GB RAM, SSD storage)?
