If you do a proper isolation test, which I suggested earlier, which includes finding the jack closest the demarc removing all wiring that connects further onward to the rest of the house (so the line just comes from the demarc to the first jack and nowhere else) and disconnect any phone on that jack and connect the modem, ideally without the filter and you will now have isolated all wiring and in theory get the best sync rate that the line to your home will currently support.

Dont forget DSL does not require a filter if there are no POTS devices connected across the line, it simply connects direct to the line, the filter simply stops POTS devices and wiring from shorting the DSL signal.

Also on very short lines (as I understand you have) often pads are deployed on that line at the MDF, if not used you can sometimes get odd results like this, I dont know if the new ISAMs still need pads, but this may be an issue.

Does any ISP in NZ offer Annex-M yet?

Here's the stats out of my Cisco 877M:

Modem Status:    Showtime (DMTDSL_SHOWTIME)
DSL Mode:        ITU G.992.5 (ADSL2+) Annex M

                       Downstream               Upstream
Capacity Used:   99%                            100%
Noise Margin:     3.0 dB                         13.5 dB
Output Power:    17.0 dBm                     12.5 dBm
Attenuation:      25.0 dB                        16.0 dB

Speed (kbps):   18932                           1901

Annex-M will do up to 2.5Mbps upstream.

Matt.

Hi Cyril, i went for a nosey under the house and saw just the one single line from the demarc connected to the jackpoint my dsl is connected to. nothing else out of the ordinary as well. i think ill open up the jackpoint and disconnect the line off to the sky jackpoint and see what that does and remove the filter also to see if theres any improvement.

Welcome to GeekZone MattR :-)

Those are impressive stats, notably the upstream connection speed of 1901 kb/s!

Im going to keep checking for interference at my end.. i dont think my issue is modem related. If i can resolve my current issue.. ill have to try a cisco 877m :-)

Thanks to all for the ongoing assistance

Different modems do give different sync speeds, but your problem seems much more likely to be a line issue.  That said, try a different modem if you can.

The 877M is at work, I only get 812Kbps upstream at home - that's the limit of the crappy DSLAM that Optus use. It can't even do 1Mbps! :(

Hi Matt, no AnnixM is not going to be offered by Telecom or to my knowledge any of the ULL suppliers (Orcon and Vodafone), however all providers are starting to provide VDSL2 as an option which offers speeds of 50DL/20UL if within 1km of a DSLAM, currently Telecom is cabnetising its network to bring a DSLAM with 2km of 85% of the population, a project that has been running for roughly a year and completes in 2yrs time.

Dammager, because of your closeness to the DSLAM and your good DL speed, something tells me that the reason you are not gettting full UL is more to do with some profile that has been applied to your line, have you asked your ISP or Telecom about this.

i had a look at the wiring at the jackpoint and had a bit of a tutu and guess what...

Upload speed jumped to 900+ kbs

Nothing felt loose but had a play and did an isolation test and got the below results!

Maybe the sky guy left something loose i'm not sure but all i know is i now have some decent upload speed :-)

now in the back of the wall socket did the sky tech just put the wires in the same tiny slots as the phone line wires ie on top of them cos that'll do it sometime they loosen the bottom pairs contact and giving them a little push can do the job and you'll get better contact

Sky installers are notorious at fracking things up... at the last rental I was in before buying a house, the sky installer (from the tenant before me) managed to wire up the jack using one core from each pair in the cable.. when I had DSL installed, the tech was dumbfounded.

cyril7: Hi, it seems a little odd, you should get closer to 1Mb/s, I would definitly try a broadcom chipset (RTA130 has that) and see if it improves., I assume you have done a complete isolation test incase some unforseen device is across the line that you have not realised.

Cyril

Are we really getting FS/FS ADSL2+ in NZ? The reason I ask is that you mention closer to 1Mb/s upload speeds when I see options for UK based ADSL2+ with 24 meg down and 2.5 meg up. I know distance plays a part as well.

I get the feeling NZ ISP's are limiting upload speeds again, thus destroying the benefits of a full speed connection.

cheers

It's cause New Zealand don't use Annex M, instead of being the fault of the 'evil ISPs that want to do nothing but provide slow Internet connections'.
