My point is, the TV journos are doing a story that would appear to be about how customers who can't get Telecom can't get Broadband..

this is not quite right.

That is assuming you are talking mobile broadband, which is more expensive, less reliable and probably those 97% don't reach most rural areas.

Yes, it's a different price point but that's not at issue here.

The TV3 Blurb talks about broadband not being available and once again draws the line Broadband = Telecom. No Telecom = No Broadband.

Why don't you give TV3 a call and see if you can get on the show to explain that to Joe Public and set the record straight.

If they're not interested in having a real solution then we can assume that Campbell is just beating up on Telecom again.

Unfortunate that mobile broadband is far more expensive than fixed line offerings. If mobile broadband pricing was similar to fixed line priceing I would have no hesitation in dumping my fixed line.

Remember three or so years ago when all that WIMAX spectrum was auctioned all the wanna beees were blowing off how they were going to roll out WIMAX networks and still waiting for the action and new players to be seen in the wireless space.

It's not that expensive.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband, $69.95 for 3GB, +$10 for extra 3GB (if I read the plan details right), then $10 per GB (0.10 cents per MB) overage.

It's in the same ball park as 5-10GB naked adsl plans (see Snap, Xnet, Maxnet).

If you don't actually need/use a landline you can save a bucket of money not paying line rental for POTS.

How fast is 3G compared to landline? How good for gaming? Plus 10 gigs in above Vodafone pricing would cost $120 approx, in Christchurch telecom $88 approx, 10 gigs and landline included. Saw letter to editor in press last week, seems St Albans got no ports left either, goodness sakes it's less then 5 minutes from city centre.

I think Albany has Woosh Wireless coverage too so there are options
I remember trying it at Dick Smith in the Albany Megacentre

The population in and around Auckland (as well as many other parts of the country but not to the same extent) has been growing steadily for decades. Telecom have failed to upgrade infrastructure in a manner which could cope with increased demand - demand that should have been anticipated many years ago. They deserve a good beating.

It's just yet another in a long, historic list of failings which demonstrate how much they have their eyes off the ball.

IMHO.
