DLM sorts your ping out for you, and there is not much you can do about that.
speed wise, id say between 30 and 50mbps down and about 8-14mbps up

I'm on rural (sadly, not as close to the cabinet as you are) and no, you get the same service as anyone else. Which is to say, as good as your line will deliver.

ild put you closer to 50 down on a rural line, should come out with about 9dB attenuation if my math is right there.

Latency your only option is DLM deciding, DLM-1 is the only profile with low latency so i would say best advice is simply plug in the modem, and DONT touch it. that will allow DLM to see you as reliable as possible and keep hold of that DLM-1.
Dropping to DLM-2 will give you +7ms latency each way. (so essentially a jump of 16ms on pings.)

Well looks like the local cabinet has switched on the fibre connection although I dont think they are allowing adsl2 profiles but the line attenuation has changed. What are these stats like, the upstream sync seems a little off is that normal? Actual download (speedtest) was 7.4 mb/s d/l and 0.6 u/l. From my understanding its normal to have more noise going from adsl1 to adsl2. What gauge wire do they use for rural lines?

You could probably manage a 17a line on that connection if your lucky.
broadcom chipset is quite a positive thing, your upstream is still hurting a fair bit there. downstream is impressive though for the distance. master filter installed already?

yes master filter already in as far as I know. Not sure why the upstream is a little iffy; internal wiring? but I would of thought d/l would suffer as well

So looks like really good stats on my line. I note ping has jumped by 10 over adsl which may settle with time. One question in the modem (hg630b) settings for vdsl it has dsl latency path 0 and path 1 both ticked does this improve latency or has no effect on it?

your on what sounds like DLM-2/4/6 these have a latency profile of 8ms, based off those speeds likely 8b 9dB snr and i suspect you might fall over to 17a there.
post your full stats if you want us to comment more deeply on it
The DSLAM sets your latency, you cant do anything about it. DLM decides what profile for you to be on.
EDIT:
on second thought, sounds more like a 16ms profile to be that high, assuming you are in auckland.

Timaru; so ping on original adsl to auckland was 33; after fibre to the cabinet 24 ; after vdsl 34
im not up on raw latencys from there to auckland. sound like 8ms though.
tracert zeus.jetstream.co.nz should be about 14~16ms to the first hop assuming your isp terminates within the local area..

Interesting my ping to the same server at work was 35 to auckland with fibre. The VDSL is the same but when I was on an adsl1 profile but fibre to the cabinet (22km out of town in the sticks) my ping was 24. Does the transistion to adsl2/vdsl or fibre increase ping as it gains more latency at the cabinet? Or is Timaru got some funky exchange stuff going on?
