Hey all,

So as the title says, Im looking at OCing my recently bought Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB. As I'm completely new to OCing I thought I'd check in here and see if anyone had any tips for a beginner. Ive read through a few forum threads and articles to do with OCing a GPU and the current plan is to first increase the core clock by 10MHz each time, afterwards running 3DMark 11, MSI Kombustor and Crysis 2 to check for artifacts and any other problems that might occur, then when I begin to notice any problems, decrease the clocks by 10 - 20 MHz.
Afterwards, doing the same for the memory clocks seperately.

Currently Im not planning on messing with voltages or BIOS flashing and I'm looking at either using Sapphire Trixx or MSI Afterburner. Is there anything else I should be taking into account?

Thanks :)

Use Furmark 1.91 for stress testing. Be prepared for BSOD, Driver crashes and freezing when things don't go well - so a few reboots. As long as you keep the temperatures low (below 80'C ideally) then you should be fine.

If you arent touching voltages you probably can't take it very far unless you have a good card. i took a sapphire HD5850 to 900mhz on stock volts which i was pretty stoked with. Wasn't hugely stable for gaming but worked for bitcoin heh :p

If you were bios flashing you could've tried to unlock it to a HD6970, but apparently overclocking the equivalent amount is almost as good.

How much stress testing should I be doing before incresing the clocks each time?
I'll stick with stock voltages and BIOS for now but they could always become an option down the road :)

Also, Ive started using Furmark and I've noticed that whenever it runs I hear a faint high pitched squeal coming from the GPU (I think), even with stock clocks, so far the temps haven't gone over 65'C.
Is the squeal anything to be worried about?
