No experience with Amahi, but it sounds pretty solid so long as you can automate the cloud backup and local backup. If you wanted to go nuts, you could switch the backup out with a fresh disk and rotate weekly.
I don't bother with a NAS myself. To get a really good one costs $1000+, it's just more money and my PC can do the same job.

Many cloud services only keep 1 x copy - eg. the latest so if you have mangled a file then the mangled version gets uploaded to the cloud and your backup is not mangled too.Having said tat Some services like cubby (cubby.com) have file versioning and when you run out of space drop the loldest versions of archived / versioned files to make more space.
Crashplan keeps versions.
deedledeedle: After reading all your input and a bit more research I've decided to use an old desktop to run amahi as the central storage/server, a local external hard drive to back that up and cloud to store important stuff (not that much is really important when you're honest,I think photos would be the only thing I can't replace)
Any criticisms of that plan?
I'd have just used your HTPC, so long as it has the space and power required. RAID is nice to have, but if you have good backups that are easy to restore from then it's not a big problem. Cloud backups would be slow to restore from. Amahi looks fine, but I only gave it a cursory look.
VPN'ed into the works system and everything is backed up there twice

the reason i haven't used the htpc is that it runs openelec and i don't know how to run as a server at the same time,i suppose i could install linux and kodi and run it like that.its also quite noisy(i think the fan would prefer to be elsewhere, sounds like it wants to escape!) so i only tend to have it on when i want to use it
