That is ridiculous. If I buy a product, I expect it to work well without having to do a multitude of steps to "fix" an error because of a manufacturing defect.
You'd expect it to not spontaneously combust either..
i have got 4 6tb's WD Reds in my qnap and they are stable as hell.

You've probably heard of WD Red's catching fire because of the sheer number of them out there and possibly some badly cooled NASs ... I doubt it's happening a lot because, if it were, there would be a recall.
My FreeNAS box has WD Caviar Black drives and they have been excellent. Over 4 years of runtime and haven't missed a beat - check those error counts (all 6 2Tb drives are similarly healthy and 2 x 250Gb)

I bought a 216j late last year.
Ended up buying 2 NAS drives from pbtech when they were on sale.
1 WD red + 1 Seagate NAS drive, both 4TB.
Hoping to get the best of both worlds, the probability for both WD Red and Seagate NAS to fail at the same time is pretty slim...

I bought a DS216se last week and put two 2TB WD green drives in it from my dead server (hence the need for the NAS). But whilst one was ok, I couldn't get the other to be recognised. After a reset of the NAS and reinstall of the DSM it came up as having bad sectors and the NAS wouldn't touch it.
So I've just ordered a couple of WD Reds through Ascent :)
I use RED drives in our NAS devices at work which in total are around 40 drives and have never had a problem with overheating. I wouldn't recommend using eco drives in a NAS or RAID.
I'm not sure if I should buy the 2TB or the 3TB. With the 3TB it means I will have to pay on top of my Amazon credit, around $45 more..

If you calculate cost per TB, the 3TB is better value - and is also a more useful size.
The 3TB, 4TB, 6TB, and 8TB WD Reds all cost about $65 - $70 per Terabyte.
I am using 10 x 6TB and 10 x 8TB Reds, and have had no problems with any of them (except that the 8TB drives are a bit noisier).
