You're right in the scheme of things, but $10 is $10 and why should I pay a courier cost when they offer it for free.
If you're worried about spending $10, you better be sitting down with a can of booze & tranquilizers when they give you the estimated cost :-)
Think $500 - $1000++
Through a reseller he could have obtained fixed pricing.

Through a reseller he could have obtained fixed pricing.
reseller: stuck in the middle between unhappy customer desparate to get data urgently
and Data Recovery company trying to do their best with a sometimes very trashed drive
:-)
then customer decides he's had enough of waiting, wants the drive back, and ends up taking it to the same Recovery firm that was originally doing the job for the reseller
Is it Payam offering truely fixed pricing for resellers ?
is fixed pricing are really fixed when the job escalates requiring purchase of parts and compatible drives needed for hardware level recovery .

I have a reasonable amount of experience with sellling data recovery services, and your worst case scenario hasn't occurred to me.
Everyone (usually) wants their data as soon as possible. Datalab offer a drop everything fee, but it's big. Most people aren't prepared to pay for it. We outline timeframes clearly, the costs clearly and explain not all data loss is recoverable.
We stay in regular contact with the customer and have found the recovery services quoted have been at the quoted price. I've not heard of them charging extra, but I can't categorically state it's impossible they might.
Without wanting to sound flippant, if data is important, it should be backed up, airgapped and checked regularly.
If you haven't done this, then you are really going to learning to pray and have to accept you are in for some expense and or heartbreak. It's not mean, it's a fact. We do have these conversations with customers to set their expectations.

I had a WD drive in my NAS suddenly start to fail last week. One day it was all good, the next not so much, the day after it was gone completely. All my important data has been mirrored to another NAS so if I can't resurrect the other one any losses will be trivial. However, out of interest, roughly what sort of timeframes are involved with the Datalab service?

It would depend, I usually check on a case by case basis. I don't recall ever waiting more than a week for a single drive.
Usually, their fixed price stuff is per drive, so if you were for example recovering from a 4 drive raid then it could be longer in theory.
You do know that the definition of broken is was working, now isn't? :)

Yes, it was a one off & we learnt from that.
For our established customer/clients , we would arrange the recovery through the reseller option .
For anyone else , if we cant easily get the data off ourselves , we just give them contact details of data recovery firms and send them on their way.
Recovery jobs for customers you've never dealt with before can easily turn into a waste of everyones time , and sometimes do.
There are the occasional customers who are totally unrealistic about the timeframe for difficult, hardware level data recovery. They want to know exactly when it will be finished. I can only tell them its as
long as it takes, there is no fixed timeframe on recovering data. Worst case it can take over a week. Ringing us several times a day isnt helping.
We have had occasional Recovery jobs where costs did escalate , as more and more issues were found and the specialist had to find buy the & HD parts needed from overseas
Cant blame the Recovery Specialists for that, its not their drive & not their fault it had such a massive failure .
there is no fixed timeframe on recovering data . If its easy it will be quick, otherwise.......
