I emailed customer support about how the system worked as they didn't have anything specifically set up for it on their website. Got a reply saying to provide the serial number and then it'd be escalated. I gave that and queried the return part as there is nowhere locally to return the drive to. The reply was that I'd be provided with a shipping label so it wouldn't cost me anything. Haven't heard anything further. The last response from them was 11 July I've just chased it up.

Similar to my experience so far - at least they are consistent.  Will be interesting to see how this plays out - I'm likely to need to use another drive to put the data from my WD on before I send it away. At the moment I don't have a spare drive with 3TB spare on it so would have to buy something.  I assume WD will expect the old drives back before the new discount / drives are issued.  I've asked that question to them as well because it all feels a bit counter-productive / expensive.  Simply put I want to keep that data I've still got!

Anyone decide to send their drives back in the end?  The costs involved seemed counter-productive ie, buy something to put all the data from the drives on before sending back, postage costs of sending back, paying 60% of a new drive price + shipping and they couldn't tell me if any NZ re-sellers would be used so I may have had to use Amazon etc.

In the end I've decided to use that money on a different brand - still making decisions on that.

Looking to plug these devices back in and just block them from the Internet - keeping them on the LAN only.  Will see how that goes.  Once I pay for a new NAS setup I'll transfer the data off these devices onto the new and take my luck.

Lot's of talk on the WD forums of similar experiences in the return programme.  Also plenty of examples where drives have been sent back but WD have said the drive is damaged and won't issue the refund etc.

Anyone had any joy here?
