You intending to overclock your RAM? If not, then DDR3-1600 is overkill. Even with DDR3-1333 there's plenty of overclocking room... not that you'll get much out of overclocking RAM anyway. Save yourself $140 and get this kit instead. Even going to triple channel over single channel won't net you much in real world performance. If you upgrade your RAM, do it for capacity, not timings or frequency... and going to 6 GB is only worthwhile if you're a gamer (which you're not), or use other memory guzzling apps like media editing/transcoding or scientific/mathematical software.
Yeah not going OC teh RAM probably, but might look into overclocking the CPU. Its suposed to be easy and OC really well? Be nice to get 3.0Ghz or even 3.3Ghz out of it, but never really done much OC and havent read up yet on how to do it with Core i7.
more ram is always a plus gamer or no adobe PS cs3 will use it as will alot of video/audio editing proggies if you go the 6 gig way then use a 64bit OS win7 64bit is realy great stable and fast also youd notice a fair improvement if you use raid0 on two of those seagate drives app/os load times are much faster than a single drive going from ~45MBps to ~90MBps or more with a sequential read speed of ~220MBps also if your not planning on OC'ing then save a bit of money and get the slower ram

I have begun to wonder if I have done something wrong? Any ideas?
I have a similar experience going from an Athlon64 3800+ to Q6600 (ages ago).
Apart from the odd game, and perhaps a few CPU-intensive apps (media transcoding), I don't see that much difference.
Having said that, I don't use the Q6600 box for work so there are very few apps running simultaneously.
Ironically, my "gutless" 1.6GHz laptop gets a very good thrashing (my work machine).
Unless someone really needs the extra cores for a specific purpose, I'd recommend getting a higher clocked dual core at the same price point (I know you've already brought it - just saying).
