You might run out of drive bays in that case 🤣

Stranger things have happened...see roughly the middle of page 2. I've got a drive to go in that space, just (very slowly) building up the courage to remove it from its supremely elegant plastic case.

(hope I'm not being rude, as I realise you weren't actually commenting to me, but I just can't resist sometimes)

When PBTech do an install:

  • Do they do a decent job of cabling?

No idea about PBTech, but I had a PC built locally years ago, and they did a very nice job. The only minor problem was they did the cables so neatly and tightly that they went so close to expansion slots it was a struggle to get stuff in and every time I added a HDD I had to get stuck in with the cable tie cutters to be able to use the spare connectors.

Yeah those twelve bays will be a limiting factor! From memory you can take one of the drive bay areas out.

That's interesting. I have told them that I will be adding three HDDs and one SSD so hopefully they don't make it too difficult.

Curious how well things will hold up in shipping. Back 10 years ago I had a fan on a CPU cooler that fell off if you looked at it sideways. I think these days most things would probably survive a courier trip.

Thanks @Tzoi. I've removed the slower RAM - happy to get recommendations on the best RAM, I understand it generally but not quite well enough to do the trade-offs. I don't want to pay massive amounts for tiny improvements, I'm not doing supercomputing here but I don't want to cripple a fast system with slow RAM.

What case would you get instead? I just want a black, professional looking case with no window, suitable for putting work laptop on top, and quiet. I guess a case that comes with PWM fans would be better, rather than paying for the basic one they include then having to replace them.

Updated parts link here.

1) Fractal cases are pretty cool. R5 is nice.
2) Unless you are going to overclock, then stock cooler and DDR 3200/3600 ram is fine. If you are going to overclock then it is a VERY different story. Do research.
3) Dont expect Huge overclocks from ryzen on clockspeed. Ram overclock will help.
4) You mentioned you dont want to pay massive amounts for tiny improvements. Once you take into account the cost of a decent cooler and more expensive ram, it might be worth while to actually go up a model of CPU etc and use a stock cooler. But that 5600X will be quite fast.
5) B550 is a very good choice. I got an x570 probably was a bit of a waste of $.
6) Flashing bios is pretty easy, can watch a youtube video on it. Just make sure you dont have a power outage when its happening. :D

Apparently the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX550 is out of stock, which might be what's holding up my PC build at PBTech. Can anyone suggest a basic video card that's not rubbish and isn't loud and isn't complete rubbish? I've tended to use nVidia in the past but maybe Radeon goes better with Ryzen? I rarely use any GPU power, don't game, but maybe handbrake or something can use it.

Here's my requirements:

  • Quiet, ideally fans turning off when not needed for cooling
  • Output ideally DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort in that order of importance (I can get cables easy)
  • Ideally single slot (just so it doesn't take up more space than it needs to, doubt i'll use other slots)
  • Ideally under $200, but really not too bothered

Options

  • Sapphire 570 (obvious choice but $270)
  • Sapphire 550 low profile for $180 (smaller fans may be louder, might as well get the 570)
  • Gigabyte 1030 2GB ($153 quiet, comparable performance to the RX550, better in some ways, worse in others according to benchmark)
  • Gigabye GTX 1650 ($257, disappointing reviews, RX570 comes oue btter)

I think the RX570 would be my choice, followed by the 1030.

The only one of the cards you listed thats single slot is the 1030. i wouldnt even touch that. dual slot wont impact anything on your build.

i would be surprised if you editing software didnt use a GFX card, handbrake does and its cuts compression time by about 60% if not more over the CPU.

Get either the 570 or the 1650. the 570 is about 12% better preforming than the 1650 for about 5% more $

I brought these the other day for my Father. he already has a GFX card, PSU and some HDD's

I still have a working nVidia 520 video card. The RX570 is about 100 times faster, but I don't really need fast... but the 520 so old probably cause problems. 1030 GDDR5 reviews about the same as the RX550, only real difference is RX series has DisplayPort output that might come in handy one day, but video card is trivial to replace.

Photoshop CS6 uses GPU very little, Adobe CS6 Bridge that I use not at all, and Premier Elements 2019 don't use GPU at all as far as I can tell. I use handbrake about once a quarter, and the new 5600X will be plenty for that. Don't really mind a more powerful GPU for $100 extra if I'd use it, but seems a waste as it's really being used as an adapter rather than an accelerator.

Guess I'll decide tomorrow if I want to spend almost double for no real gain - seems unlikely.

Thanks for your thoughts Jase :) Looks like you built a good PC there too.

New computer turned up today 😀 Clean build, great cable management, looks good. They found an video card that I ordered RX550, but they're out of stock now.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. Lights come on, fans spin up (case, CPU, not GPU), RAM starts flashing, but nothing comes up on the monitor. Best guess is GPU problem, since the fan doesn't spin up and there are no lights at all, but since it can turn off when it's not warm that's not a sure thing. Reseating the video card didn't help. I'll pull out my old video card later this afternoon, nVidia 520.

PBTech don't do diagnostics over the phone, even to check it's plugged in properly. I have to send it back to Auckland or drag it into the Wellington branch - it's about 20kg. Guess I'll have to do the round trip into town some time 🙁

So you got sent a pc they built for you and it doesn't even turn on? Surely not?

Maybe try to do BIOS update via USB..

Question born out of not knowing what I'm talking about, but, card isn't sending output to a default output you're not using or you're sending signal to hdmi1 and you're monitor is set hdmi2. Or something.

It turned on, makes a noise, but nothing on the screen. I've tried a TV and a 1080p monitor. Changing the graphics card doesn't work.

Using Q-Flash apparently you have to take the CPU and everything else off the board. I'm not going to do that, that's why I got PBTech to do the assembly. It'll have to go back.

I wonder if they even turned it one when they built it.

If it doesn't post at all I'd reseat the RAM and check the 24 pin and cpu power plugs are correctly pushed in. They are the most likely issues. Otherwise definitely don't try and flash the BIOS, get them to make it post first.
