Nah PBTech can do the diagnostics. They say they only do hardware install, but if it just doesn't turn on, I think it's reasonable to do.

mentalinc:

I used qflash plus the other night with full system built no worries

That's interesting. So @mentalinc the whole USB stick, GIGABYTE.bin, button press, with M2, CPU, etc still plugged in? Can you have a link for the detailed process, I couldn't find it. For example, do I just push the flash button, or do I turn it on then push it?

You basically nailed the process.

Put file on usb, put in the correct usb slot (will say BIOS on the USB drive).

Have system turned off, and press the button which will cause a light to flash while it flashes and then the system will turn on and boot...

https://www.aorus.com/blog/How-to-Update-Your-BIOS-Part-2.php

Step 1: Prepare the USB drive
Download the latest BIOS version for your motherboard from the motherboard product page. Extract the downloaded BIOS file to the root of your flash drive. We need to rename the BIOS file so that Q-Flash Plus can find it. Rename the BIOS file to GIGABYTE.bin.

Step 2: Plug the USB drive into your computer
Now you need to plug the USB drive into the USB port that supports Q-Flash Plus. You will be able to find this in the manual of your motherboard.

Step 3: Flash the BIOS using Q-Flash Plus
Ensure that your power supply is connected to your motherboard and try and boot your computer. After about 20 seconds, Q-Flash Plus will notice that the computer is not booting correctly and will start the BIOS flashing process automatically.

You will see that the BIOS LED will start flashing on your motherboard which indicates that the BIOS flash is currently in progress. After a few minutes, the LED shall stop flashing which means that the BIOS flash has been completed.

surely the process is in the motherboard manual? just had a look, and its not, that's disappointing from gigabyte.

https://www.gigabyte.com/FileUpload/global/WebPage/20/images/utiltiy_qflash_uefi.pdf

"Save the latest BIOS on a USB thumb drive and plug it into the Q-Flash Plus port, and then you can now flash the BIOS automatically by simply pressing the Q-Flash Plus button. The QFLED will flash when the BIOS matching and flashing activities start and will stop flashing when the BIOS flashing is complete."

Also ensure that the flash drive used is formatted to FAT32.

did you get the motherboard box? it should have the bios version on it. It needs to be version F10 to support the 5600x, newest version is F11i

when you turned it on how long did you wait? first boot can take a while

also what do the 4 LED's show under the 24pin power/ram slots

20) CPU/DRAM/VGA/BOOT (Status LEDs)

The status LEDs show whether the CPU, memory, graphics card, and operating system are working properly after system power-on. If the CPU/DRAM/VGA LED is on, that means the corresponding device is not working normally; if the BOOT LED is on, that means you haven't entered the operating system

First boot on Ryzen can take a while. How long did you wait?

Might be worth a quick google to see if anyone with that motherboard has had the same experience as you are getting.

I would expect if you paid PB to put the system together that they would test it before sending it out to a customer.

And the last one, you are plugging into the Graphics card output and not the motherboard (dont shoot me i had to ask)

I suspect they've sent me the wrong model motherboard. I ordered the Pro V2, the box says they used v1 "Pro AX" even though they've explicitly told me it's the V2. It's difficult to tell, but pretty critical since if I flash the wrong version I could brick it.

The only sticker on the motherboard I can find inside says 2/BB/K8A074 06643. The box says "B550 Aorus Pro AX V1.0" instead of "Pro V2". UPC from the box is 8 89523 02404 1 Anyone able to decode that, or to work definitively work out the motherboard type?

Would anyone return the whole computer to get the v2 of the motherboard instead of the v1? My theory is if v1 was ok they wouldn't have bothered making a V2. They're visually almost identical so difficult to tell that way.

look between the CPU and the RAM, it will give you an indication of what board you have. the V2 should have that stenciled next to the name of the board

the only difference is the AX board has AX wifi, the rest looks identical specs wise

and the difference between the pro and pro v2 is down to internal usb headers

almost visually identical

and it depends if you bright it for the extra bits or not

I don't need the extra bits, but if it goes back they can put the one I ordered in.

I opened it up, the DRAM light comes on, flashes to BOOT for a fraction of a second every 30 seconds or so, doesn't do anything else. I eventually worked out how to use Q-Flash which is

  1. Follow the standard instructions - USB drive (older seems better), format FAT32, BIOS renamed to GIGABYTE.bin into the root
  2. Put the USB stick into the CORRECT port. Not the one laballed Q-FLASH on the back panel, that's incorrect, it's the one a bit further away.
  3. I left the CPU in but took RAM out, because I had a RAM light flashing. I suspect it works regardless.
  4. Hold down the QFLASH button then turn the power on. Watch for the orange flashing light on the back panel beside the Q-FLASH button, you can see it from the inside of the case as well. Wait about 5 - 10 minutes until it completely stops flashing... completely stops, not just slows.
  5. Turn off. Put hardware in. Hit Del to go into BIOS and load optimised defaults.

So it's working now :) Thanks all for your help, again it's much appreciated.

I'm not super pleased with PBTech, who advertise they update the BIOS of every B550 motherboard they sell, and who gave me an incorrect motherboard.

Don't they also have an option to do a ONLINE update direct from the bios?

Don't know. I couldn't get into the BIOS, the computer wouldn't POST or do anything at all other than spin the fans.

Suggest you give them a call and make them sort it out.

As you note they said every board had been updated (I have the email as well) and sending out the wrong board is not ok. Suggest a refund is in order given its a $350 board.

Have they sent an ATX or ITX board? How many spare PCI-e slots are there none or a few?

the problem is you dont know it wasnt updated to handle your CPU. you said the dram light came on, and you removed the ram. this could have been the issue. but because you did the bios flash at the same time you will never know.

Which USB port did you use in the end? the manual and pictures says it should bt the port to the right (board lying flat) underneath (board vertical) of the HDMI port
There is no USB port labeled QFlash, its labeled BIOS.

I will give them a call and ask what kind of solution they think is fair. The board they sent is the v1 instead of the v2, the difference is fairly minor, but it's not what I ordered. Also, I spent about 6 hours trying to diagnose a problem that should never have happened if they'd done what they claim to do which is updating the BIOS.

Even though their install service is "hardware only", checking that the machine gets into the BIOS at least seems like a fairly simple test for them to do before they send a machine out.
