the problem is you dont know it wasnt updated to handle your CPU. you said the dram light came on, and you removed the ram. this could have been the issue. but because you did the bios flash at the same time you will never know.

Which USB port did you use in the end? the manual and pictures says it should bt the port to the right (board lying flat) underneath (board vertical) of the HDMI port
There is no USB port labeled QFlash, its labeled BIOS.

I didn't describe my full troubleshooting process, which included many different combinations of RAM - one stick in different slots, different RAM sticks in the first slot, two sticks in the recommended slots, etc. As soon as the BIOS was updated all four sticks worked fine. So I think I have come to the correct conclusion.

I read the label of the back panel wrong. When looking at it upside down the label "Q Flash Plus" appears to be beside one of the standard USB ports. My mistake, but it could be clearer.

Helps if you posted what you have done.....

PBTech tend to have a sticker on the box with the BIOS revision on it. did yours have this?

glad you got it fixed in the end.

Takes too long to write what I did in the six hours I spent trying to fix it! No sticker on box with BIOS revision, just the manufacturers sticker with the board version and such.

I ran memtest overnight, came back fine. I'm running HCI Memtest today, and will Prime95 it tonight. So far so good. Only thing I've found is the fans make an annoying noise, so I'll replace them with Noctua PWM fans rather than the ones included with the case, which don't put all that much air through, but it is advertised as a quiet case. Have to check it's not the CPU fan making the annoying noise first.

Noctua A14 looks to be optimised for both static pressure and high airflow. A15 140mm looks weird and is actually 150mm wide according to what I read, so will probably go with A14.

how are the case fans setup? are they running at a constant speed or are they running based on temp? you could always modify the fan curve

i wouldnt be replacing fans until you know if its going to be running to hot or not.

The CPU reaches 89 degrees during a Prime95 test... ouch. It idles at 33 degrees. I guess I need a better CPU cooler and probably case cooling if I'm going to do any batch work! Recommendations for a CPU cooler not too huge / expensive would be welcome - the Hyper 212 Evo would be a contender but not sure of size. I don't want extra external fans or radiators on the outside of the case. Any suggestions? I have a Noctua in my current PC, works ok but was expensive and huge.

The current CPU cooler is hard up against the RAM in the case.

For lack of a better description, this is ‘normal’.

Ryzen gets hot precisely because of it’s boosting features. You could check bios to see if PBO is enabled which overclocks the cpu by a bit. GB mobos dont usually enable by default but check to be sure.

A hyper 212 will bring the temps down depending on what you’re doing, test some real workloads out first as p95 is a unrealistic load. Otherwise you’ll have to test with undervolting to lower temps.

(Check the paste job too, could be bad contact if it keeps going up)

Interesting, thanks. Agree 100% CPU isn't normal, but it's not unusual to do overnight batch processing that runs CPU really hard for a long time. I could disable some cores if it was a problem, but the CPU will throttle before it damages itself. My i7 never gets above about 65, 90 just seems a bit hot.

I'm probably not going to bother with under-volting. I just told the BIOS to "load optimised defaults" and that'll do me. I did a quick look at PBO, but PBO2 is out soon, so I'll probably have a look after that 😀

Prime95 will push the system to its worst state, Before worrying its running too hot perhaps throw a real world workflow at it and see how it performs.

For coolers the 212 and the Noctua range are good candidates.

P95 runs avx workloads, which if you aren’t using that particular instruction set makes it a bit moot to temperature test on. Intel also power limits turbo unless you tell it not to which keeps some of the closer to stock settings cooler. Ryzen will however take any headroom to perform better which may make it look like whatever you’re doing to lower temps isn’t working when ideally you’d want to tighten some of the limits. Just the nature of the algorithm unless you do a manual OC.

For undervolting a -0.03 to -0.10 volt offset could shave a few degrees off. Nothing too drastic and won’t affect performance.

TDP is also a bit misleading, even though your chip has similar to most i7 65W vs 77W the turbo features kinda blow it out by a lot since AMD mobos are looser with limit settings. There are posts around where people wanting to keep their ryzens at same temp of their old intels and needing 200W coolers to dissipate heat fast enough. While the spire isn’t as good as the prism it can keep max temp in a reasonable range if you don’t throw it heavy workloads.

Hyper 212 will do it better but still keep around 70-80C, my 3700x as an example with a cryorig h7 (with not the best contact on cpu) is a 65W tdp same as yours but will still easily hit 83C on p95 avx loads thanks to stock boost.

Interesting, thanks. A bit of reading shows that AMD considers 90 - 95 degrees acceptable and will keep throwing power at the CPU to accelerate things until it hits it. I've also ready the 212 and similar will both keep temperatures down a bit and also give you a few percent more performance due to that letting the CPU use more power. I'll hold off for now and watch what it does, but expect to get a third party cooler eventually.

I don't know if you do it with AMD cards but on my intel card I've set an AVX offset so that if I'm running an AVX load, it won't boost as high because those specifically are taxing on the CPU and cause it to heat up more

Apparently not available on AMD. However, the precision boost override is basically "if the CPU isn't crazy hot give it more power to make it run 3% faster" which can be disabled. PBO2 is coming out with a firmware update before long, I'll wait for that.

I'll probably get a new cooler just because the fan on sounds a bit buzzy to me. Noctua NH-U14S looks good, the Noctua CPU fan in my current machine is still going strong. Add a Noctua A14 fan for exhaust, and I'll put an existing Noctua fan as additional in the front of the case.

If its getting 89deg under prime 95 it will be about 5 or more degrees cooler running something like handbrake, cinebench or blender. which puts it in the acceptable category (not that 89 isnt unacceptable).

if its not thermal throttling at 89 degrees under prime 95 you will be fine for anything else you plan on doing.

I have a noctua NH-D15S on my R5 3600 and even on the hottest days 30+ degrees where the computer sits, it gets no more than 75 degrees.

I'll definitely be getting a new CPU fan because of the slightly annoying buzz on the stock one. I'll go with Noctua, you might pay $50 more but they work extremely well and last a very long time. I linked to the model I like in the post above, just a step up from the evo 212 in quality and less noise.
