nikrolls: There isn't a customer number for the Care Centres, however in my experience they're very good at replying to email. Have you received any emails back from them at all?

It's not a good idea to send them a device without loggin the job with them first, as there is information to fill out and a document to sign. However if you have sent your contact number or email with it then they will contact you.

There is a local direct dial in the Care Centre, as I asked for and was given it when I had to go back the second time in 2 days last week when the repairs weren't completed properly the first time.  Unfortunately the CSR wrote the number on the Job Card so when I handed it in I lost the number!  I didn't think I would need it again so hadn't written it down anywhere else.....

I had sent 2 emails yesterday afternoon after I had seen the package was signed for at 10am, but had not had any communication from them even though I asked for it in my detailed letter.  I did eventually receive a response at 4:45pm yesterday from another CSR, and I thanked her for her response.

Agree that the ideal situation would have been to log a job with them first - but I had first sent them an email about it over two days ago as I wasn't keen on again having to drive across Auckland so wanted to courier it, but all I got was an automated response with FAQ's and solutions.  It made mention of when sending it in, do so with full instructions and contact details, which I did.  I was only following what was in the automated email, so not sure how I log a job with them first....?

It may seem like I'm not being patient and reasonable with the situation, but unfortunately I'd need a page to list the issues and inconveniences I'd had with the phone since I got it a month ago!  So my patience is running a bit thin!

They do have a landline number but it is a private line and therefore they're the only ones who can give it out.

I apologise for the experiences you've been having. As with any make and model there are occasionally a few units that have some issues. This is where the Care Centres come in and they will look after you well. My suggestions were simply to help speed up the process; if they have contacted you now then the repair should be completed very shortly.

Charly: Only wanting to know when it's on Telecom cos I'm currently working for gen-i.
I don't get a discount through Vodafone  ;)

I heard today that Telecom are not going to be selling the N8.  If this is so then a big thumbs down to Telecom.  Can anyone confirm this?

Telecom really do need to get their game sorted when it comes to the mobile phones they stock, they are always well behind the curve with the phones they offer either being late to the market, introducing old technology, or not even bothering to offer popular phones.

Is it just mine or is the synchronisation process with OVI rediculously slow? I've installed OVI on three different machines and the result is the same, so I'm not sure if it's just an OVI thing or if I have a faulty handset. Comparing it with iTunes and even Zine it's appauling.

Also, the "watch folder" for music library does not work. I manually added the tracks to the library but now I can't work out how to synchronise them, as I would in iTunes?

I feel bad because I talked three friends into buying one over Christmas, but now that I'm back at work and having to use it in real world conditions, it's proving to have been a tragic smartphone solution.

is there a way for applications, like maps, to stop the screen lock kicking in like google maps on Windows Mobile?

Ovi Maps already keeps the screen awake, so yes.

I think your situation is quite unique and seems to be causing quite a few issues of its own. I've had experience with plenty of large-company IT systems and Nokia has never failed. In fact the N8 is keeping its own with the most reliable devices I've come across.

My current setup includes full Exchange sync plus four IMAP addresses on Push, music sync with Ovi Suite (including watch folders), apps installation via Ovi Suite and Ovi Store, and giving the Symbian installation system a repeated beating by installing up to 40-50 application rebuilds a day when doing my development work. On top of that I have various UI enhancements installed (Nokia Bubbles, Nokia Big Screen, sometimes SPB Mobile Shell) which are running most of the time along with my social networking client, Wellness Diary and about 5 RSS feeds on push notification via Nokia Reader, and quite a lot of idle-time gaming. The N8 holds up to it admirably.

Edit: layout, spelling.

My maps does not keep the screen awake and I basically a vanilla install, I think I'll try the reinstall option in OVI which is proposed if you are having trouble your device.

The synchronisation (mail for exchange) issue is not isolated as my friend has trouble with it, and like me he uses multiple mobile devices, my cousin does not have the problem, but he only uses his N8.

You may need to change the backlight setting in Maps to Always On. By default it's set to Optimised which will leave the autolock on if it's not charging to save battery life.

As there are other devices in the mix then it potentially means it could be one of them causing the issue as well or a combination of the two devices stopping your system from working how it should. As I've stated before I have easily had 5 different Nokia devices synching to one Exchange server without a hitch.

Ah, I knew you had mentioned a multiple device environment but I didn't know they were all Nokia. WP7 and iPhone seem happy, but they must be upsetting the N8.

I've changed the backlight setting under Navigation.

Be aware the screen will only stay on during navigation, not just while the Maps application is open.

By navigation you mean giving me directions to a location?

Sorry I stand corrected.

If you select Always On with Backlight under Navigation settings it will stay on in the Map mode.

If you plug in the power and USB can you get more charge? JoikuSpot depletes the battery faster than the phone changes, so even in the charger the phone is going flat.
