I've got the old "Fatboy" PS3 80GB model, and am finally bumping my head against the upper storage limit of the HDD, so I'm looking to upgrade it. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good HDD to use for this? I want to spend under $80 if possible, so am looking for best bang for my buck. I'm happy with an upgrade to 320GB, but of course would love to go higher if the price is right.

Also, is there any significant advantage to go for a 7200RPM model, or does this not actually offer that much in terms of performance increase?

Lastly, any advice or gotchas for the upgrade process are gratefully received.

There's no real advantage in going to 7200. 500GB gives You could probably pick up a WD5000BEVT for around $80.

Don't be surprised when you don't get as much extra space as you think you will. PS3 system takes a proportion of the HDD space for its own use, i.e. the amount it takes grows as the HDD size increases. So you go from 500GB -> 465GiB -> 413GiB (about 10% reserved space).

7200rpm drives can create more heat as well, nest to stick to 5400rpm as has been mentioned above.

I put a 7200 rpm drive in my fat PS3 and haven't had any issues with heat, sits on top of a warm mysky box as well.

It's kinda expensive but SSDs massively decrease load times!

I ended up going with the 500GB WD Scorpio Blue, after reading some people had compatibility issues with the Seagate Momentus. The install and transfer of backed up data was seamless, and the PS3 seems to be working just as before (apart from having a vastly increased capacity :-))
