I had high hopes for POE but it lacked the same feeling despite using similar mechanics. I did play it to about 50% of the way through, but lacked the desire to keep going with it.

The Witcher 3 is a fantastic game. I know it's quite hard at the start, so I'll share with you a few tips. Hope you find them helpful.

1. Stick to roads at the beginning

2. Do as many side quests as possible. XP!

3. Map. ?s give ability points. !s give quests.

4. Upgrade light attack, axii (rep) and quen (shield). Mutagens boost corresponding skills.

5. Loot everything. Grab all you can.

6. Bestiary shows enemy weaknesses.

7. Create each bomb/potion once each. Assign them.

8. Save, save, save. Save before any battle. Meditating replenishes health & stocks.

9. Upgrade horse with blinkers and saddle bags.

10. Dismantling at armourer -> crafting items. Sell crafting/alchemy items when you have 10+.

11. Combat mechanics. 1. Parry. 2. Dodge > rolling. 3. Quen. Single targets out from groups.

Thanks for posting that, and to everyone who has offered advice.

I know most of these from all the other RPG's. I think I have struggled with what I feel is horrible movement mechanics, and hopefully the alternative movement will help.

Dropping the difficulty helped already a little. I'll definitely upgrade the items you suggested. Dropping the difficulty made meditating better that was the biggest thing I've done.

This game is pretty big, a lot of quests, I'm surprised you have only just started it. My advice is to do all of the gwent quests as soon as there available, play anyone you can and buy any cards you can. (mainly from shopkeepers) I didn't take gwent seriously until a bit later in the game, I managed to recoup orate but failed one or two of the gwent quests so won't get the achievement.

If I had only decided to take it seriously much later I probably would have had no chance at the following gwent quests. Good luck.

Played for 2 hours yesterday, Leveling up is SLOW.

Combat is better since I dropped difficulting and healing is better no question about it. I still find Geralt pretty laggy, which isn't a reflection of my computer spec, but rather the combat style they have gone to. Seems like you need to request what you want to happen a second or so before you need it done. I don't really enjoy that part.

Upgraded swords helped. At a mission looking for a witch which has me facing a golem. I am finding that very frustrating. I can't seem to jump/roll in the direction to follow his charge so I can smack him in behind.

I am enjoying it a little more overall. Need to look into making potions and oils and stuff next I guess.

Ugh, back to slog. Went on a mission that says suggested level 5 but everything I am facing it just incredibly hard. I can drop the level again but that feels poor. Can I exit this mission and go try more side missions and level up some first?

Took me 20 levels to fix the Golem, now there is this Nithral and I feel well underpowered.

NM Figured it out.

The leveling up is slow when compared to other games. I suggest you explore the map and do as many sidequests as possible. If you rush during your gameplay, you'll lose fantastic aspects of the game. More tips:

Buy books and read them. Sometimes it gives you bestiary info. The bestiary is your best friend. Knowing the enemies weaknesses and exploit them makes the combat a lot easier.

Getting money is hard. Sell armor pieces to the local armorer and weapons to the blacksmith. When you sell stuff that way, they pay more for the items.

Complete contracts. Try to negotiate the price, but don't be too greedy.

The big problem I have now is that everything I am selling is practically worthless despite being rare or magical. I am sometimes only getting 7-10 crowns for a decent sword, maybe $30 for something really special. Considering how much everything COSTS, it's quite frustrating.

Yeah - questing and hard negotiation when agreeing fees for notice board quests is the best way to make coin...not so much selling all the trash you pick up!

To get a bigger loot bag inventory for the horse, does it come from luck, or a specific quest etc?

The best way to upgrade your horse gear is winning the races. Go to the quest start point, create a save, and if you lose, just reload that save.

Winning those competitions is easy. If your horse is running out of stamina, just stop "accelerating" and block the opponent's path. Easy-peasy.

Weird, I found the game quite easy once I got into the flow, playing on 'Blood and Broken Bones'. I did have one rage-inducing moment early on where I took on the werewolf contract which was way out of my league at the time.

This may or may not be obvious but make sure you upgrade your Swallow potion to the max: you get more uses, it heals you faster and for longer, and can be used mid-combat. Plus you get to keep both the 'superior' and 'enhanced' versions which gives you almost double.

Yeah, I am well into it now. Level 21 and having a lot more fun! I still find elements of the game a little infuriating, but I have moved to Skellige now. What has been nice about that is how much faster I level up. Plus a new bunch of power places. I am not finding the extra skills on offer, as amazing as I'd hoped.

I use Igni and Push the most and almost never use shield or Yarden.

Need to find White Gull.

Finding lots of gear which does more damage but has less benefits. IE I have a Sword which does 40 less damage but as a 35% chance of bleeding damage. I am not entirely sure how to prioritise raw damage over things like auxiliary damage etc.

Every battle I spam the shield Quen sign since it essentially allows you to take one free hit, so that coupled with its upgrades (exploding shield) and the Tawny Owl potion can get you through almost any fight.

You can find the ingredients for most potions at the Herbalist's Hut north-east of Oxenfurt

I generally focus on raw damage first for swords but I think overall the defensive strategy (swallow, quen) is more important
