macuser: The HDMI spec has more to do with the fact that the Televisions you are connecting to do not have the specification. The PS3 can update it's firmware to support updated HDMI spec's as its internal hardware is more than capable. ?The Televisions you connect to have hardware that is designed to meet the spec they are building to at the time(aka 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4), and most Televisions are not able to be updated to newer firmware by the consumer, so you're stuck with what you originally paid for. ?
??
Rollux: 1.4 it is 4k x 2k (4096x2160/24p)
stuzzo:cgrew:langi27: ok maybe this is the answer.

Sorry for my ignorance, but if the HDMI cable itself is 1.4a speed capable?then won't that push dual 1080P through the pipes for 3D content? Or does the actual port on the PS3 have to support 1.4a for this?
Cheers.
The PS3 and the TV both have an HDMI chip, the cable is just dumb wires.
The chips have a certain capacity to process and output the signal and HDMI 1.4 is higher capacity than 1.3.
It appears that with the PS3 Sony have managed to get enough data /signal through the 1.3 interface to do 3D but may have had to constrict the maximum output to 1080i per channel and lower res. audio.
cgrew: Saweet! That type of resolution would utilize Blu-Rays to their full potential.

I think this is wrong. According to this its 1080p per eye/channel but lossy audio only. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=5172

How? BR max res is 1080p, it's already been stated.
I've no doubt we'll see 4K TVs, but I'm not convinced there'll ever be a need for them. You've seen this chart before: http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.png
How close do you want to sit to your 100" TV?
Direct retinal projection or brain implant is where it's at!
cgrew: I presumed with 50+ gigabytes of storage space per BR disc there would be potential for better resolution/colour and audio for the future?
Brain implants..? For what?
