I suppose the issue for Elden Ring (and other soulsborne games) difficulty is due to it’s game design. It very much takes a minimal on-rails or handholding approach and expects the player to experiment, explore and eventually succeed through the game on their own achievements. It’s also likely why these games don’t exactly have a ‘story’ but do have lore and worldbuilding that tells a story.

Fans of the series usually appreciate this design either because it gives them a challenge, or nostalgia from games of old that had similar designs. Removing this part of the game for a built-in ‘easy’ mode as it were would make the series very simple and not engaging. Exploration would be tedium as there would be less threat to worry about, bosses would have their mechanics invalidated as player mistakes wouldn’t matter.

As an example the ‘first’ boss in the open plain thats been commented as having broken a few controllers isn’t designed to be defeated by a fresh new character. Players should probably not engage head-on, or will learn quickly not to, and sneak around to the next Grace point instead. They will pick up crafting, and hopefully move on to the next indicated Grace point where they will get introduced to levelling and a mount.

If they then decide to backtrack and approach the boss on horseback (who themselves is mounted) they’ll have a much easier time manoeuvring around their attacks, almost as if it was the encounter was designed this way.

The only criticism of this is that players are expected to figure this out on their own, which comes back to ‘it’s designed that way’. If players don’t take initiative to find different methods then they likely won’t enjoy the rest of the game at all. The difference I suppose in being told where/what/how to do part of a game vs figuring it out yourself.

To tl;dr this I’d probably say the game isn’t really for people who are in it for the ride. The game expects you to take the wheel, sometimes over rocky terrain. In the end if you get through it you learn how to drive, across the whole series mind you since they are so similar, and hopefully enjoy the journey.

Just realised online multiplayer gaming is like dropping into the matrix.

Finally jumped into some Deep Rock Galactic with a mate. How the hell did it take me this long to get on the hype train, what a seriously fun game. Hooked.

I was really struggling with Horizon, only getting 45min-ish sessions in all last week before bed.  It's not a good way to play, too fragmented.  I spent a good amount of time over the weekend unlocking map areas and finding secrets and doing side quests, and now I'm so much more into it!  It's a stunning game (even though 30fps for quality mode).

I loved Village.  One of the only RE games I've played since the early days too.

Speaking of fragmented gameplay sessions, I checked the Switch because I was thinking about getting back to finishing BotW and realised the last timestamp was 02/2020….

I know that feeling. It was rather sobering to finish Persona 5 last year and realise that it took me almost half a decade, on and off...

I'm finding the same. I haven't had a decent opportunity to spend decent time with it, though I've got better with the bows.

There is a bit more to the combat this time, I usually opt for stealth where I can because I find it hard to remember how to do things 'well'.

Portal 2

I played Portal years ago and got Portal 2 but never got around to playing it.  It is a puzzle style game, you have to figure out how to move yourself and objects around a room to reach the exit.

Not necessarily the sort of game you have a long session on, I tend to do a few rooms when i have some spare time then leave and do other things.

Pretty cheap, $12US, and often trivially cheap when Steam have a sale.  I'd recommend it

It gets easier once you've levelled up enough to take some chances, at that point I found myself trying new combinations of things.  But until then it was just too chaotic on the field.

By comparison, the in-game stats tell me I’ve been playing for 60 hours and I’m at Level 38 and 33.36% completion. I believe skill level maxes out at 50 - and this means you can’t fill all the skill trees.

Really enjoying it.

I am really confused with GTA5 for PS5 (PS5 Edition as opposed to PS4 version played on a PS5).

I did a search in the store, and the only thing I could find was GTA Online, which cost $0.

When it downloaded it shows GTA PS5 and isn't playable till 15th (I think). I can't work out if I have GTA5 PS5 Edition for free or I need to buy something else? I cannot find anything that is specifically mentioned as GTA 5 PS5 edition.

Did you do it on the PS5 itself, down to preorders? (Store -> scroll to preorders). I see both options, story mode was def $17.49 for me. You might just have the online edition which was free?

...I've been back on with Cities Skylines.   Just trying to get expansion happening, and keeping transport options from choking the city.

I was only made aware of this game last night. As a SimCity player from way, way back how does it compare? I loved SimCity 4, didn't like the 2013 edition (barely played it), but how does it compare? I'm watching a tutorial video and it looks interesting.

It's a pity about the 2013 Simcity game, basically killed off the SimCity line 🙁
