Hi all.

Just purchased a Draytek Vigor 130 to connect (in bridge mode) to my Netgear R8000.

I am seeing intermittent connection issues, and lots of lag in games (things will lock up for 10-60 seconds and then all catch up at once). Even worse than my old modem connected to the same outer, and that wasn't even in bridge mode.

The DV130 is set to PPPoE passthrough. Is there anything else I need to do to complete full bridge mode? The bridge mode option in the router is under MPoA settings and can't be done with PPPoE passthrough? Should I do bridge mode instead of PPPoE passthrough?

No changes to firewalls or anything, so I assume it is some issue with the interaction between the DV130 and the R8000?

Any ideas?

There's firmware available that has everything pre-configured for the 130 just load the firmware and then configure your router

It's for VDSL so if you're using ADSL you'll need to make some changes.

I applied the config file there and all it does is use MPoA bridged mode instead of PPPoE passthrough, which was my initial query. The modem does not connect when the config file is applied. I had to change to "ADSL only" to get the modem to sync, but it won't connect to the internet.

Could someone help explain the difference between PPPoE passthrough (works for me, but not stable) and MPoA Bridge mode (not working), and what MPoA settings I need to use to get that working?

If I use MPoA bridge mode- what setting do I set on the router to handle authentication? the options are: PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP

MPoA (RFC 2684 "full bridge mode") will only work on EUBA-based ADSL2+ if your ISP allows it. To test whether your ISP will accept this mode you will need to set VPI/VCI to 0/110 respectively AND apply 802.1q tagging VLAN=10 to the interface then choose PPPoE or DHCP then check the logs to see if there is any response or time out.

Some UCLL unbundled ISPs allow PPPoE VC-Mux on 0/110 without vlan tagging - no fancy modem required.

Appreciate the response, I will give this a go.

I have PPPoE passthrough connected currently without vlan tagging, and actually vlan tagging broke the connection so I had to remove it.

Can you clarify a couple points:

current config is 0/100 and vodafone documentation says 0/100 - is 0/110 correct or typo?

Is this in the router? or in the modem? Can't enable PPPoE passthrough in conjunction with MPoA. enabling one disables the other in the DV130.
Can i connect to the bridged modem (MPoA) using a Broadband PPPoE windows connection for testing?

On Draytek Vigor 130 (I don't have this modem but going by the emulator at http://eu.draytek.com:10130/)
Under General Setup: VLAN tag insertion ADSL [Enable] Tag value [10] Priority [0]
Under MPoA / Static or dynamic IP: MPoA (RFC1483/2684) [Enable] Encapsulation [1483 Bridged IP LLC] VPI [0] VCI [110] Enable Bridge Mode [checked]

On the Netgear R8000
Does your Internet connection require a login [checked] (assuming this questions is asking if you want PPPoE)

Keep in mind the above may not work for your ISP.

For reference-
(1) PPPoA modem on 0/100 - supported by all ADSL ISPs in NZ, modems are preconfigured for this mode, can't bridge at Ethernet layer because there is no Ethernet layer only ATM.
(2.1) Enhanced PPPoE modem on 0/110 - available only on Chorus EUBA connections, ISP has to accept this mode at their end, allows for a priority channel and can bridge at Ethernet layer.
(2.2) Standard PPPoE modem on 0/110 - available only on some unbundled ISPs who have own gear in exchanges, no priority channel and can bridge at Ethernet layer.

The 'PPPoE passthrough' feature on the Draytek Vigor modems is only applicable in (1) as it essentially adds the Ethernet layer in since you can't directly bridge ATM to Ethernet as they're two different protocols.
The above steps refer to (2.1)

Yes hence the quote it's for VDSL if you're using ADSL you'll need to make some changes

vpi/vci 0/100 is for ADSL

vpi/vci 0/110 is for VDSL

ADSL requires PPPoA authentication but Draytek built an excellent feature into their boxes PPPoE pass through - essentially you use PPPoE authentication on your router and the draytek turns it into PPPoA in the background.

So to summarise - we really don't know anything about your connection but if it's ADSL VPI/VCI 0/100 and PPPoE on your router NO vlan tagging

I'm a bit confused.

I'm on an ADSL connection with PPPoE passthrough set up, 0/100. It connects, but is not consistent. Drops out a few times per day and lags horribly in games. I had port forwarding set-up for some games on the R8000 with my old modem, and everything worked fine. As soon as I switched to the DV130 with PPPoE passthrough, I am having these issues. Firewalls etc have not changed, so it seems like some conflict between the DV130 and R8000?

So I am wondering if there are any other settings I need to set as well as the PPPoE passthrough settings I already have configured, to resolve these issues. I thought perhaps I should switch from PPPoE passthrough to MPoA bridged mode (these cannot be both set at the same time), but it sounds like that is only for VDSL connections? Yitz posted settings for MPoA on ADSL so I am a bit confused here.

Sorry for the noobness, just trying to get this sorted. Appreciate the help!

idn0, already on the v3.7.6 firmware ? The release notes for that talk about fixes for bridge mode (haven't tried it myself).

Got it connected in MPoA bridge mode. Still having issues though. Ran a net analyzer and it said the only issue is downlink packet buffer is a bit high, but this would have been the same with my old set-up I'm guessing.

I've tried on the router:

Disabling DHCP on modem and enabled on router.
Disable Port Scan and Dos protection.
Disable IGMP Proxying
Disable SIP ALG
Default and custom DNS

Among those changes it has improved somewhat, but still lag spikes of very high ping every 30 seconds or so.

Any ideas? Router firewall? should I try open NAT?
