Hi all, 'upgraded' from a USG to a UDM Pro for my business network. Figured it made sense to remove the 85Mbps bottle neck that comes with all the security features turned on in the USG. But have noticed one particularly annoying trait (other than the dramas with the current 6.xxx controller releases), which is whenever the UDM Pro is rebooted it cannot establish a WAN connection to the Chorus ONT (no light on the UDM WAN port) unless I also restart the ONT. This is a major pain as it requires my physical presence if I'm doing anything that requires a reboot. The old USG has no such problem (if I swap it back in it happily talks to the ONT after a reboot). Unfortunately I fall into the 'knows just enough to be dangerous' category which is a bit annoying! Is there a setting somewhere in the UDM Pro that could explain this behaviour or better yet prevent it? Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Never experienced this. Can you try setting up the connection on the 2nd WAN port of the UDM Pro to see if that survives a reboot?

It only has one RJ45 WAN port the other one is SFP+ so I'd need to buy the RJ45 module to test.

I have a SFP to to RJ45 GBIC you can borrow if you are wellington based

Thanks for the offer but quite a bit further north. Don’t mind buying an SFP but annoyed at why I should firstly and secondly no guarantee it will make any difference. I’ve been upgrading the UDM Pro with every new controller release (can only be done via SSH) in the hope something will change, but as of today’s .24 release no joy. Must be a few on here with a UDM Pro and a standard Chorus ONT.

You definitely shouldn’t have to, I have not had a chance to play with the UDM yet so cant help

Try turning of auto-negotiation on the WAN interface and setting it to 1000/Full..... you shouldn't have to (infact it's not recommended with 1000-BaseT - IEEE 802.3 states that Autonegotiation shall be used).

If you can use a root login like on EdgeRouters (sudo su), you should be able to just run tcpdump (or install tshark and use that) and get a dump of the WAN traffic while it is failing to connect.  Make sure you get the dump file to save to RAM drive.  Use scp to copy the dump to a PC where you can use Wireshark to analyze it and see what the problem is.

Had a play today. Rebooted the UDM Pro and sure enough no WAN connection. Used wireshark and just got an error msg. Using the instructions posted here https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/ho19aw/capturing_udm_pro_wan_traffic_directly_into/

 

 

Note: Running wireshark with the WAN connection operational, i.e. after restarting the ONT worked fine. Wireshark connects and loads of data scrolls down the screen.

 

A video speaks a thousand words. So we begin with the UDM Pro fully rebooted after being restarted via a software commanded reboot. As you can see there is no activity on the WAN port. I then turn the ONT off and back on. After 30 seconds the link light comes on and a minute or so later internet connectivity is restored. The link is still set to auto negotiation.

Bit of a long shot, but it could be worth trying with an alternate cable?

 

I was initially using the flat white cable that comes with the Gen 3 ONT to connect my ER4. After a few weeks of running without issue at gigabit speeds, I found I was randomly limited to ~100Mbps. After swapping out the cable my speeds returned to normal. Not exactly a like for like scenario, but at least in my experience, cables can randomly start misbehaving.

Probably should clarified above - that yes indeed I had the same issue with a UDMP and chorus ONT - after changing to 1000/full it sorted that problem (and through reboots as well), so I’d give that a go next.

That "ppp0 no such device" error probably means just what it says.  Likely the WAN port (eth0?) is not up and hence the ppp0 device does not exist.  When the UDM Pro is failing to connect to the ONT, check the status of the WAN port - does the port have its connected LED on?  Does the UDM Pro report the WAN port as connected and fully up?  Does the ONT have its LED on for that Ethernet port (LAN1?)?  Does it all start working if you unplug the Ethernet cable from the UDM Pro WAN port and then plug it in again?  Or if you do the same at the ONT end?

That's what I figured. The WAN port seems to sit there inactive not polling to see if anything is connected to the WAN port. When the ONT is restarted I guess it pings the UDMP WAN port which sparks the UDMP into action. So unless the ONT initiates contact the UDMP just sits on its arse not bothering to check if the WAN port is connected to anything.

 

  When the UDM Pro is failing to connect to the ONT, check the status of the WAN port - does the port have its connected LED on?  Does the UDM Pro report the WAN port as connected and fully up?  Does the ONT have its LED on for that Ethernet port (LAN1?)?  Does it all start working if you unplug the Ethernet cable from the UDM Pro WAN port and then plug it in again?  Or if you do the same at the ONT end?

 

 

As you can see in the video the WAN port light is not on (this is following a reboot of the UDMP). Wireshark gives the error I showed. As you can see in the video when I restart the ONT the WAN port springs into life and if I then connect using wireshark everything is normal.

 

I'm going to turn off auto negotiation and see what happens when I reboot the UDMP...

Just to finish off.... I thought I'd just eyeball the reboot process by rebooting the UDMP using the unifi app on my phone (I'd used my laptop to reboot it from within my office). So I commanded the unit to reboot and it... just ignored me! The app was telling me it was 'disconnected', but the UDMP was clearly just going about its business and didn't reboot. Ended up having to pull the power cord to confirm it hooked up with the ONT. You get what you pay for I suppose!

That is very, very weird. I'm installing a UDM Pro shortly so will attempt to replicate this. Have got it all boxed up here but my network is sorta like a production network now where I don't make breaking changes if I can help it :)
