OK - I admit I am a Noob on Routers, I've only ever used ISP supplied/configured wifi routers. But I always like to learn and have been running some Ubiquiti AP's in my home (3 of them) for a while now (setup via CLI initially), run a 24 port managed HP Procurve 1810 24 port switch for my music system/NAS drives, etc and am generally OK with basic IP settings. VLAN, NAT not so flush with knowledge ;-)

Anyway I am wanting to learn the Edgerouter Lite and have followed a geekzone thread from Michael Murphy - however, I just can't get it to connect to my ONT - to clarify the router does report a connection on eth0, as it does for eth1 (laptop connected to it) but I can't get any internet on eth1.

So I'm wondering if anyone has a config file for the edgerouter lite I can get a copy of from a current Skinny fibre user that works - ideally just a basic WAN on eth0 and LAN on eth1 to get me started - from there I can figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Hi have you put vlan10 on eth1, then a pppoe session on that.

Sorry don't have a config ready to hand

No ? from Michael's tutorial I thought PPPoe and VLAN-10 was for the eth0 port that connects to the ONT ?

I've been trying to follow this guide... https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=205740

Ahhh sorry ignore my comment, so does the ppp session report it's up and gave a public address.

What DNS records is the dhcp server handing out.

Have you done Vlan 10? Because I think skinny DOES NOT. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

VLAN 10 - that could be part of it - I guess following a 5 year old post might have been leading me up the garden path !

I'll try setup wizard again but without VLAN on eth0

You’ll note I’ve actually kept this up to date right up to a few months ago when I got rid of my Edgerouter…

The information is on the post. You just need to configure PPPoE without VLAN 10

@michaelmurfy

I found your post useful & encouraging - it's what got me onto buying an Edgerouter Lite in the first place.

At the moment I am feeling like I am missing something really basic (making me feel a little bit dumb to be honest)...I've followed the guide and just can't get Internet through to eth1. I've set my laptop to 192.168.1.5 with dns to 192.168.1.1 and plugged into port eth1 on Edgerouter to configure...but just not getting internet.

Used the Wizard WAN+2LAN2

PPPoe with no VLAN

dummy user name and password

Enabled default firewall

Didn't know what do do with the DNS configuration as it wasn't covered so left as default (ISP supplied I think)

Saved and rebooted

Went to the port forwarding section and set WAN as eth0 & LAN as eth1 & saved changes

Not sure about a port forwarding rule as it wasn't covered and I'm a complete noob in that respect.

So if anyone has any bright ideas on what I am missing then feel free to enlighten me - I need it !

OMG - It breathes - and I figured out what was wrong....so all my initial testing was by disrupting the household network while I tried to configure the Edgerouter for skinny (mistakenly using VLAN-10)...

So that did not disrupt everybody while I figured out what was wrong a mate of mine said it would be OK to run the ONT into a basic network hub so that the ONT connection was shared with 2 routers !!

So I was still pulling my hair out when I reconfigured with no VLAN, until I disconnected the original router and ran the Edgerouter on its own after rebooting the ONT.

I guess that's all part of the learning ;-) So now I can start to tailor the settings..

Your WAN interface is wrong. It should be the PPPoE interface in the firewall settings.

I think that mate owes you a beer or two. And don't take networking advice from them again!

Michael - appreciate your help ;-)

Do you mean in the Port Forwarding tab ?

So change from eth0 to PPPoe0 or use the "other" option and make it "PPPoe" ?

Yep - it needs to be your WAN interface as per my guide. Please go through and confirm your firewall settings (info on the guide) as you need to ensure everything links to pppoe0 for the outbound interface.
